most anything that puts stress on CPU will do fine

Use Prime95 if you want to be absolutely sure. It stresses your CPU further than it would ever normally go, if its stable then it will be stable any other time.

I wouldn't recommend Prime95 as on haswell CPUs it would increase the voltages to around 1.5v and kill them. It also is pretty unrealistic and make your CPU way hotter then it will ever get

If you are scared to mess with things in the BIOS it is much easier then you think. Doing this in the BIOS will lead to a better OC and a better understanding of what it happening. We have some great step by step guides on the forum for it

Unless of course the rare situation where you actually intend to use the system for running such strenuous applications.

 

I personally run 3 sets of cinebench to test each overclock setting, recording CPU voltage, system power draw, peak core temperatures, and cinebench scores for each run. Then once I have an overclock that I think will work I run overnight stress test of handbrake and other programs that I would normally run. All the data is unnecessary, but it makes for some pretty graphs in the end. As I run my system under constant heavy load 24/7 I tend tune in a mild overclock that is still within acceptable power efficiency.

I agree. I have also seen some issues with some of the within OS overclock tools where they would default to absolutely stupid voltages and break profiles etc.

The last thing that you want is to load an overclock profile only for it to try to set your 1.2V DDR4 RAM to 1.77V for some stupid reason... (one of the many issues observed using Asus AI Suite on a ROG Strix x99 rig, not all overclocking tools fail this spectacularly).
