Getting my first SSD

So Ive just build a new rig after retiring my old core 2 duo setup. This is mainly a workstation with some occasional gaming on the side.

Ive been looking for a realiable, cheap SSD that would last a few years before it has to be replaced( I dont update components that often unless they break on me).

 

I found this endurance test and Im leaning towards the 850 EVO, but I wanted to know your own experiences with SSDs in general.

How is performance over time? how long did it take to fail?

i have it myself and love it. i would recommend an intel ssd but they cost a bit more for similar performance.

That's funny actually. My Adata one in my desktop still performs like champ and yet my Samsung one in my laptop is starting to slow down.

 

This is despite my Adata SSD being 128Gb vs 250Gb of my Samsung. And also despite my Adata SSD being 1 year older than my Samsung.

Samsung all the way. If you have money constraint, 750 EVO still a good choice, I personally use it on few on my cheap rigs.

 

If you have extra you can get 850 EVO or even the PRO, depends on how good is your rigs.

Do you tried the Samsung SSD software Samsung Magician? You can try to use Performance Optimization, upgrade the firmware, optimize os settings, setting up OP, and enable RAPID mode if you have extra RAM. 

 

I personally doesn't have any problem with Samsung or Intel drives, even the old one. One of my PBX server using 128G ADATA SSD also runs without problem until now. I think SSD failures more to bad luck.

how do you know its started to slow down

what benchmarks are you using and what SSD

 

if its an 840 evo then of course it's slowing down if you didnt update the firmware to fix the issue it had

Lol. Why do I need SSD software? This is stilly and stupid. I paid for an SSD. Not for Software.

The Samsung is an 850 EVO.

 

And What I mean by slowing down as in  it takes longer to copy files and whatnot.

that's not an accurate way of measuring speed.........

 

files will write at different speed depending on the type of file and its compressability

 

if you want to actually know if its slowing down or not use a speed test like crystaldiskmark

and you should also be using crystaldiskinfo to monitor the health of your SSDs

hows the adata one? there are plenty of those around here. Ive seem plenty of kingston as well but the 850 seems rather elusive

IDK I had a similar predicament when I got my first PC. I knew I wanted an SSD but didn't know which one.

 

In the end it came down to me remembering Linus' Sponsor spots of Adata's SSDs and so I looked around and Adata had a cheap SSD in my budget.

 

I have the Adata SP 600. It's a nice Sata3 SSD but it doesn't have the best write speeds in the world.

For an entry level SSD, anything from a reputable manufacturer will be fine.  Just get whatever is on sale.  All SATA SSDs are pretty much equal in performance now days.  If you want more speed you need to step up to PCIe drives.

 

edit: Intel 730 and 750 series are the only consumer drives that have proper power loss protection.  it's very rare, but sudden loss of power can permanently brick an SSD.  It happened to me a couple years ago using a drive by OCZ.  I lost a lot of data and have resolved to only buy Intel drives on my workstation.  Like I said, it's rare and most people don't worry about it.

Update: 
Ended up getting the evo 850 after searching every store I knew. I'm very impressed with the performance of this little thing, read/write speeds seem right on spec. This drive seems optimized for windows since I didn't have to disable indexing or anything. Pretty cool, now I just need a mechanical drive for my movies and music.
