Hello i am wondering if a cx 430 will power my system and is soon to be upgraded to a rx 480.

Amd 760k

radeon 6870

8gb ram

64gb ssd

100gb hdd

Don't buy an RX480 until the issue with power delivery is fixed. It may be days from now, it may be weeks, it may be months, etc. For the record, I would not use a CX430 with a 480 since the CX430 is of "meh" quality.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

isnt the 480 more power efficient though? i thought it only pulled 150 watts?

It pulls half that from the PCI express slot which isn't compliant with PCI express standards. The whole "don't use a CX" thing has nothing to do with the wattage. Not all PSUs of X rated wattage output are of equal quality and yours isn't that great.

The power delivery issue is on the PCI-E side, it pulls more wattage out of the motherboard (66 max is the standard, it uses around 75 or something), this might result in breaking your motherboard, some motherboards do provide security for this but most of them out there don't. (This is just some extra information about the issue).

Using a CX430 isn't a good idea, might upgrade to a M12II-Evo 520W? Love that thing. You could also buy a EVGA Supernova or a Corsair RM(i or x) or a AXi (High end xD) or a similar one from another vendor.

it will probably be years untill i get one, i was just making sure it will be future proof.

I'd still get a better PSU, doesn't need to be fancy. Just needs to be a good 550w-650w 80+ Gold from a company like Seasonic, Silverstone, EVGA (don't get the G1/Nex) etc.

Also note that the 430 will not be putting out 430w. At full power it can only do about 350w due to it only being 80-82% efficient under full load.

EDIT: spec also says 32 amps max on 12v rail so that mean it can do at best 384w so at 80% (if the 5v and 3.3v rails are under full load) then it can only do 310 watts or so the the 12v rail.

This is why I cannot stress enough on getting a good PSU.  People read the max combined power output (the number they advertise, 430w in this case) and people think they have head room for upgrades to big GPUs when they don't.

A motherboard supplies power aswell, the max standard is 66 Watts over the 12V rail on the PCI-E Slot (This is a world-wide standard)
The RX 480 is pulling more than 75Watts through that lane.

The PCI-E connectors for the GPU's are supplementairy power, not the main ones.
This means the 12V rail requires more Amps to go through it, this can and prob. will result in breaking the motherboard.
I hope AMD will bring out a fix for this, that will probably require all GPU's to be send back to the factory though.

Wait for the fix, if there ever will be one.

considering i got the motherboard for 15 dollars it probably wont do.

That's probably true. Most non H-Z series boards are probably going to be a bad idea with an RX480 as well. Just wait until AMD fixes it by integrating an 8-pin to split power properly.
