So, Im currently running an Fx 8350 and was thinking about upgrading to an Intel build so I can take advantage of that juicy single thread performance bump.

I just did some other upgrades so im trying to not empty the rest of my bank account.

I was curious if I would be better to upgrade to a Haswell I5 and save on purchasing new ram, or bump up to skylake I5.

Save the RAM and the motherboard ;)

Buying Skylake also requires you to go to 1151 socket ;)
A 4690K will do the trick and gives you a OC headroom aswell.

EDIT: i5-4690K

Depends what you want to do. If you want to do video editing or anything truly processor intensive, go with the cheaper 1150 platform and aim for a 4790k on sale. (Check Microcenter, they will ALWAYS have the cheapest CPUs) The extra threads will help with rendering and such. If you are just looking to game, I'd go for a 6600k and a decent z170 board, that way you have more of an upgrade path in the future even if it is slightly more expensive now.

Skylake would be best so u dont fall far behind in case u keep your CPU for next 3+ years. If u can find cheaper haswell CPU and will upgrade in 2+ years then get haswell. Preferably K chip so u stay relevant for longer.

ddr4 prices aren't gonna rise any time soon so go with an i7/i5 4xxxk and reuse your ram, raw performance increases between intel generations are minimal so skylake isn't going to give you much longer usable life

If I were you I'd go with some used stuff. I know, I know. Shame. But it's the best way to keep the cost down if you're really just looking for a cheap performance boost. If not, then I'd go with the Haswell chips to save the RAM. I just hate the thought of paying the same prices for "old" tech as new, hence the used option. The CPU's should still have warranty left so if they are DOA, you'll get a new one.

Once you sell your old CPU/mobo, that should easily pay for the new CPU, leaving you with the low cost of a motherboard.

Or the Xeon. Which would be the better bet if it's mostly video editing to keep the costs down.

Whats the best priced Skylake mobo if I have no interest with overclocking? And would going cheap on Ram be bad? Because i heard more expensive ram is just a gimmick

Is the upgrade worth it at all right now or should I wait for the next intel generation/zen?

Wait for Zen. Worst case scenario, you'll just get Skylake then if Zen disappoints. It should also get cheaper.

On Haswell, you could do something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($239.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($69.88 @ OutletPC)
Total: $309.87
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-06-28 20:17 EDT-0400

The Xeon is a smarter route, but you lose out on having an iGPU.  You don't need massive overclocking for gaming, and you get the benefit of Hyper Threading.

For Skylake:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($197.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($57.88 @ OutletPC)
Total: $305.86
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-06-28 20:20 EDT-0400

Personally I would save more for the K-Series/Z-Series.  Overclocking Haswells and Skylakes right now is not as much a benefit to gaming as it will be 5-10 years down the road.  An i7 6700K will easily last 5 years and probably closer to 10.

RAM speed does improve the quality of game play in specific situations where there is high CPU overhead.  It will cause the game to have higher minimum frame rates that make a more stable gaming experience.

I can grab a 6600k from a nearby microcenter for 200 so Id go with that route.

But is a 8350 to 6600k going to be a really noticeable upgrade?

Note that im running a gtx 970 right now.
