need advice for gpu (unique situation)

So I didn't do enough research when buying my gpu or waterblock for my custom loop.  I found out that my r9 fury nitro is not reference.  So now I have a water block and no gpu for it.  With the Rx 480 coming out it should give me more options.

 

here are the options I can think of

1: get r9 fury x reference and use in my system, but I was told 4g of vram is a bad idea

2: get rx 480 8g and new block, with option to add another down the road (I'm not fond of multi-gpu)

3: get 1070 and waterblock.  Cards are hard to find and overpriced, plus I don't know if 1070 will be enough

4: get 1080 msi w/waterblock or 1080 reference and waterblock.  Whole lotta money.

 

My plan is to get an htc vive and I know that each solution above would play it just fine, I'm trying to think ahead at what the VR requirements might do.  As for gaming I will be getting an ultrawide monitor so I won't be 4k gaming any time soon.  I only play a hand full of games at a time, currently minecraft, the division, GTAV and will be playing no mans sky when it comes out. (might get back into world of tanks)

 

So can I get some thoughts?  What combination would you go with for price-performance-futureproofing.

well, one thing to consider is my rig isn't running and who knows when NVidia cards will be available. Not a reason to go amd but it has some influence.  Any rationale behind NVidia choice?

Performance. The 1070 performs about 10% better than the Fury X so if you can get a Fury X for the same price and are eager to get a new card that IS an option but the 480 or 1070 are the best.

I was under the assumption that the fury x would drop drastically in price, to like $300 considering it's marginally better than the $230 480

Not Marginally actually. The Fury X would still be 30% or so faster than a 480.

so I'm looking at about

$725 for the cheapest 1080 along with a waterblock.

$575 for a founders 1070 along with waterblock

or what $400? for an r9 fury x

 

keep in mind the $125 I already have into my gpu block

Well - Fury X is better value than a 1080, not sure about the 1070 though. Also, wait for the RX 480 prices.

ok thank you, I got into this mess by not researching in the first place, add on expecting the micro center guys to know about water cooling and it's a disaster.  I have 3 gpu water blocks 0 of which fit a single gpu I own.

at this point I'm figuring 1080 or fury x, depends on how much the fury x drops and how important the vram is

My answer is 100% just wait. If you don't want to go through the trouble of Crossfire, wait until we know everything about the RX 480's Performance, and if it still can't perform up to snuff, go with a 1070 or 1080.

IMHO: Either go for #4 or get some cheapo card to use for ~6-8 months till Vega comes out

that might be a good idea, I have a 380 sitting next to me that should fit.  I'm very limited on length of card due to the reservoir.  Maybe I'll just pipe the whole thing up with no gpu for now and run a 380

or I could find a dirt cheap reference 380 once 480 comes out and pipe that up with the block I have for that

I think this is a good idea. From what I've head from people with a Vive is that the more power you have, the better. So unless you're buying a vive right now, I'd hold off on a 1080 till we see 2 things:

1): Retail stock without nvidia price gouging (there could be stock but nvidia is holding back to generate more hype (no 1080s = more disccusion about 1080 and less about RX 480 and 'exclusivity')

2): A Competitive AMD offering. While the 480 is this supposed great value for money, it isn't a high end card and for those going with VR, it's irrelevant. When we see a fully fledged Vega card, 2 things will happen: 1080 price will drop to compete with Vega & Nvidia launches a 1080 Ti (aka fully unlocked big pascal)

great insight, thank you.  I won't like running a 380 on my new machine and a fury on my old.... but it'll be worth it.  The fury won't fit because of the reservoir

The 480 CAN do VR - it's designed to be VR ready for cheap - that's the whole idea behind it

Well we don't know what the performance will be like, but the general consensus is that more GPU = much better for VR. The leaked benchmarks seems to put the 480 somewhere between the 390 and 390X in terms of performance. For 4K gaming, that would make the 1070 about 35% faster (and the 1080 about 65% faster) . Add on their simulations multiprojection and it will probably destroy the 480 in VR. 

 

The 480 might be able to do VR, but it will be most likely be "budget VR". Not in the same league as the 1070, 1080 and the Vega cards. 

 

OP I would recommend getting a 1070 or 1080 depending on how much you can to spend. There is about a 22% performance difference. It's up to you if you think the price difference (probably a lot more than 22%) is worth it.

I think it would be a mistake to spend all that money just to then cheap out on the GPU. 

It might be worth waiting a bit though. The prices of the 1000 series cards should drop as the stock gets bigger and the initial serge of buyers all have the cards they wanted.
