it's probably just the GPU core that is running fairly hot...the heat output ain't that high i'm sure. It just mean the reference blower card is crap.

20x times as many cards in stock as that of the 10xx series, this summer is going to be hot like hell !!

I doubt anything will convince the die-hards that any of the 480 leaks are running on the best possible drivers until reviews come out on the 29th. Then the excuse will switch to AIB cards are the real cards, and reference doesn't represent the real performance... It's just gonna keep going and going.

 

That being said, a Firestrike Extreme graphic score of 5419 is right in line with a 970 and 2500k pairing. http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3175368 not shabby. Although price/performance of the 8GB 480 reference card with this score is roughly: 

 

5419 / 8589

= 0.63

$240USD / 0.63

= $380USD

 

So basically (assuming these firestrike numbers are accurate) an 8GB 480 is roughly equal in price/performance to a GTX 1070 at $380USD with FE clocks.... in Firestrike at least. Grain of salt, blah blah blah. Given that normally price/performance degrades as you go up, that's pretty impressive if you can get an AIB 1070 near MSRP, which are coming in stock more and more. Not so good if you end up buying a reference 8GB 480 for any more than $240-250USD.

RX 480 8GB will definitely cost around 240-250, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some exotic pricing at 250ish to 270ish

5419 graphics would put it roughly in between a reference 970 and a reference 980, a little closer to a reference 970.

I kept telling everyone that AMD has been advertising this as a min spec VR card for months and to not get your hopes too high, this card probably wasn't going to challenge a 980 Ti. I didn't see them releasing at $199 though, I mean 970 with a big factory overclock performance for $199 is a really good deal. Especially if this card can maintain the leads in DX12 that the R9 200/300 series hold.

Basically about as thorough as you're gonna get for now, and falls in line with almost all leaks and rumors. I'll give myself a pat on the back for guessing correctly at reference card overclockability.

In a vacuum sure. Again not sure why a product has to be more expensive for it to be just as good or better than.

I like to think of it as like with brand-name foods and off brand/store brand foods. Sometimes, even maybe often the store brand or off brand product is better while costing less. Hell it might even be certified Organic by like the USDA, Non-GMO Project and all those other Organic Certifications, and could be cheaper than a brand name product or a similar brand name product.

 

Nvidia is that brand name, but AMD is the store brand/off brand. Why can't they bring to market something that costs quite a bit less than what Nvidia has, that is also just as good or better than what Nvidia?

 

Now, spec wise it kinda sits in between the R9 380X and R9 390 but has a lot more tflops than both. 
The R9 390X has 5.1tflops, I think it's official the stock clock of the RX 480 will get you about 5.8tflops, if you can get a 1.5GHz OC that brings you to like 6tflops or 6.1tflops which sounds like it could push it closer to having higher end performance. 

 

I agree though even if it does have 970 performance, it still has pretty good price/performance but it kinda kills it for the enthusiast on an budget who wanted a card that could do 1440p 60fps with High Preset and maybe 2xMSAA.

 

If you wanted a 1080p card, it's fine for that but it's kinda a shame because the R9 380 and R9 380X was a pretty decent 1080p card already and looks like it's VR capable on the border of VR ready with out any issues and be smooth enough.

But how likely is someone who can only afford this card going to also be able to afford a Rift or a Vive? I guess you could say that their savings with this card allows them to afford VR too. But I'd think spending that $800 or so on a better GPU and maybe CPU would be a more wise of an investment. 

 

Still a damn shame that AMD practically said in a bit of an undertone of Polaris being under $300 they're not even going to half-ass an attempt at trying to compete with Nvidia. But it's possible that the RX 480 could be that half assed attempt performance wise to sort of compete with Nvidia but again from what they've said it doesn't sound like it will.

 

Which Vega is probably slotted for Q1 '17 but will probably cost quite a bit, so I'm expecting Vega to be in the $450 to $600 range for reference. Navi will be another beast but might be cheaper and closer to 2018, like Volta.

But 230$ for refference card, which is throttling and cooler is simply disgusting.

 

So we will need to wait for Sapphire to make decent cooler for that card, and unlike Nvidia, prices for AMD custom cards will increase.

If you ask me, RX480 Nitro will cost somewhere around 280$.

It comes at MSRP, what do you expect? Last time I checked there are no GPUs at MSRP available from the green team and at least they didn't slap a fancy name on the throttling cooler and charged extra for it.  I doubt the Nitro will be that expensive, more likely it will be ~$20 more than the reference cards.

 

There are different benchmarks with different results from shady sources floating around the web. How hard is it to wait 3 days for legitimate reviews with proper drivers?!

I score higher than this overall with my msi gtx 970 gaming 4g, only slightly less in graphics.
