I absolutely cannot recommend a Founder's Edition card in the first place. If you could actually buy a 1070 at the $379 MSRP, it would be easy to recommend. If you buy right now, I've gotta go with the 980 Ti.

You probably aren't going to get five years at max graphics out of anything available today, though. Games in 2021 might be a little harder to run than they are today. Maybe a year or two of gaming at max settings in most games depending on your resolution, then a few years of compromise.

First, don't buy a Founders Edition, it's not worth the price, then what is you power supply ? What resolution are you playing at ? Overall the two card are similar but I would advise getting the 1070 :)

This question has been asked almost everyday since 1070 was announced I think.

The 1070 is as good as or in some cases outperforms the 980Ti. I don't know where you are from but if the 1070 is cheaper then, why would you get the 980Ti?

If you're gaming at 4k, neither card is going to handle it well. Buy a 1080 and be done with it. Have sommething that can actually somewhat handle a 4k load.

Although the 980 Ti is a better choice right now, keep in mind what Nvidia does to older generation cards.

They support them really well actually, I had a GTS 450 and the performances have been improved through the years (Linus made a video about old video card support)

The story is different on higher end cards, just look at the 780 and 780 Ti. They used to destroy the 290 and 290X, and now even the 290 is almost as fast as the 780 Ti, and the 290 hasn't been getting that much performance improvement. I can very well see the same thing happening to Maxwell cards, especially the 980 Ti.

That has more to do with AMD's own driver improvements than some Nvidia conspiracy to hurt their old cards. To put it as kindly as possible, AMD often has a lot of "room to grow" in their driver software.

The HD 7970 is another example. It started out its life behind the GTX 680 in most games, and a few years later Nvidia had to rebrand the 680 as the GTX 770 and give up their power consumption advantage just to stay ahead of it.

I know that, I used to use the driver improvements as an excuse for my 290. But I think if you look at benchmarks they did actually gimp the performance, from what I've heard. Could be wrong though.

nope, the ti is a beast that still beats the 1070

if you do a proper OC and cooling on the 980ti it can match the 1080 too

you should check what lays did with his 980ti

@Briggsy ... lays got the world highest firestrike score with his 980ti          and oc'd it to hit 1800 mhz on the core and 8900 mhz memory

1070 is a better choice. More memory and better performance overall. For those of us with Rifts/Vives its especially the better choice by far.

(I also dare anyone with a 980ti to beat my 1070's score over in Unigine Valley thread B| )

Exactly, you shouldn't compare a very lucky silicon lottery card to that of which normal consumers would receive. Unless OP got V lucky.

i guess none of you checked the topic about the 1080 i linked

normal consumers are able to cool and OC their cards too, even the 1070 depends on silicon lottery

my intention was to show you that the 980ti can be strong as a 1080 -> so its a better choice than the 1070

i know i know ... it takes less watt and has more VRAM etc...

just to quote lays "A 1450 mhz 980 ti nearly keeps up with a 1080 at 2100. "

@Briggsynoone said all ti are capable of a score like that

if you read the topic i linked you wouldve seen that he used LN2 cooling to get a score like that ;)

just set yourself a high goal when OC'ing a beasy enthusiast card like the 980ti instead of gambling with the new card

See here. DX12 and DX11 games it beats the 980ti by a few FPS at 1080p and 4k. A couple of times it is the exact same.

There are loads more sites out there with this information. I guess you didn't check the links..

Really coz a few of my friends with ref models only boost up to like ~1200ish, (stock boost is 1076, so add like ~100-150 to that for actual boost if it's not throttling)

Either way yeah, the % gain of OC'ing a 980 ti seems to be much larger than a 1080/1070 right now.  Hell, I saw one comparison where someone was comparing like a 1450 980 ti to a ~2000 mhz 1080, and the 1080 was only like 10% faster, versus the 20-30% other people are showing.  And 1450 isn't really even the "high end" thats more of a mediocre OC

@Eniqmatic i was talking about OC'd 980ti, and that they're still a better card than the 1070s that are available now

dont generalise that with those reviews where they used reference 980ti cards against 1070

The Gigabyte 980 Ti G1 Gaming is one of the few 980 Ti's that was faster than a stock Titan X.  Most of the 1070 benchmarks I have seen put it below a Titan X by a hair, so this 980 Ti would be faster.  However, it would probably be a draw once the OEM 1070's come out with better cooling and OC'ed settings.

Couple reasons to get the 1070...

1.  8GB vs 6GB

2.  Newer core with added functionality.

3.  Uses less power, which also means you can SLI on a PSU with less than 850W.

4.  SLI should be faster due to the new double rate SLI bridges.

5.  Costs as much new as a 980 Ti goes for used.

The difference is,  the 980 ti out of the box reference clocks are very low, and the performance gain from overclocking it is much bigger than the performance gain of overclocking the 1070.
