X99(lga2011) vs Z170(lga1151) for the future

So I want to make a build for gaming and video editing but I want to be able to have this machine last at least 5 years for both actual survival of the cpu/mobo and and performance to keep up with games that will come in the next few years . I am looking at the Kaby lake equivalent  for the 6700k and (maybe?) 5820k, what would be better?

We don't know, some of the other forumers claim to have a crystal ball that sees into the future.

a 6700k will be more than enough for 5 years

you dont need 12 threads, video editing works perfectly fine on 4 or 8

unless editing and rendering is your job and you make money from it, x99 is just a waste of money

save that money for GPU upgrades in a few years, or buy other better parts such as SSD storage, graphics card, more ram, etc...

NEW PC build: Blank Heaven   minimalist white and black PC     Old S340 build log "White Heaven"        The "LIGHTCANON" flashlight build log        Project AntiRoll (prototype)        Custom speaker project

Spoiler

Ryzen 3950X | AMD Vega Frontier Edition | ASUS X570 Pro WS | Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB | NZXT H500 | Seasonic Prime Fanless TX-700 | Custom loop | Coolermaster SK630 White | Logitech MX Master 2S | Samsung 980 Pro 1TB + 970 Pro 512GB | Samsung 58" 4k TV | Scarlett 2i4 | 2x AT2020

ok, then it will be even better than the 6700k

i guess if you like having the newest stuff then its good you're not getting x99

means more money for future upgrades :)

The X99 chipset seems to have lasted quite a long time - through many revisions and even some xeons.  I'm wondering if the X170 chipset will have a similar run.  With Kabylake already so close on the horizon, it feels to me like this chipset might not be as strong a potential for upgrade in the future as the X99.  Anyone have any ideas / information on this.   Was X99 maybe just a lucky fluke?  Am I just thinking X99 had a better run than it actually did?

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.
