6600k or 6700k is best for my build?

godsend

he guys, i am new in Linus Tech tips, but i have been following the youtube channel for several months, and decided to build a pc. but i am not that familiar with pc, as i have been using laptop for the past 10 years. this is my build:

1. my budget $1500

2. specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170X-gaming 5 or Asus Z170A (i am still not sure about this)

CPU: i7-6700 or i5-6600k (still not sure which is the best)

GPU: MSI gtx1070

PSU: Antec 600W Vp

CPU cooling: Corsair H55 liquid cooling

RAM: G Skill Ripjaws V 2400 DDR4 8GB x 2

HDD: Seagate 3Tb 7200rpm

Case: NZXT P410

any tips for the motherboard and the cpu? i dont know which one is the most suitable. does 6700k have better performance than i5-6600k? fyi, i dont plan to overclock it.

thanks in advance guys.

If your not going to overclocking it then why bother fitting an unlocked chip and a z170 board?

Typically, you buy K-series CPUs and Z170 motherboards for overclocking. Also, you won't need the liquid cooling since you're not overclocking (120mm/140mm AIOs are generally have poor cooling performance for your money anyway).

As for which CPU to get, that depends on what you plan to use this PC for. Gaming solely - i5 6500. Doing some work on the side such as video editing, rendering, animation - i7 6700. Pair that with a cheaper B150 or H170 motherboard and you should be good.

You're also lacking a SSD which is a MUST for a $1500 build, I suggest Samsung's 850 EVO 250GB.

Power supply is lacking in quality for a GTX 1070, I suggest the EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2.

unlocked meaning the CPU with the K at the end of it. like i7 6700k meaning that it can be overclocked for more power. if you dont like overclocking (their are risks and rewards to doing so) then you can get a much cheaper non K chip like the i7 6700 or i5 6500 depending on your budget

Or...i5 6600. People don't seem to realise it exist. Sure horrible value but still exists

I'd go with i5-6500 for anyone who doesn't want to overclock. i7-6700 is too expensive for someone who's not a performance enthusiast.

Lovely profile pic, by the way.

Overclocking 6600k and 6700k.

Basicly 6600k overclocked is the same as 6700k stock. Furthermore with i7 you will have hyperthreading over 6600. I would recommend not wasting money on overclocking and wasting money on better and more reliable Mobo, Psu, and "K" processor that will support it. i7 6700 (non K), cheap normal motherboard with DDR and normal PSU you will be able to put all the money that you saved from the expensive stuff and put it towards graphics card, which is going to increase your FPS more than overclocking. I would recommend you this. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/PG3qsJ And you save $500 that you can put towards a 144HRZ monitor for that extra FPS you will be getting, peripherals, estetics and looks, maybe Fast SSD for the games... I will leave it to your imagination.

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600, MOBO: MSI Tomahawk B450, RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 3000 (2x8 GB), GPU: MSI RTX 2080 Gaming-X Trio, CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S, PSU: Corsair RM 650, HDD: WD Blue 1TB, SSD: Samsung 860 ECO 500GB, CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C
