hi guys, i am rebuilding an old server that i had for free and i am looking for the best processor i can throw at it.

here are the two choice i have:

Xeon 5080

or

Xeon 5160

the 5080 clock's at 3.7Ghz and have HT and a FBS of 1066

the 5160 clock's at 3.0Ghz and have no Ht and a FBS of 1333

witch one would be my best bet.

thx

Wawa

I would say the 5080 but remember it has a TDP of 130w and the 5160 is slower but has a TDP of 80w so if your power supply can hold the 5080 go for it.

what server. You probably should use these chips as there old and hot. The 5080 is probably faster.

It is faster but has a TDP of 130w while the 5160 has a TDP of 80w + the 5080 has Hyper Threading

Sorry bout that, 5160 is much faster. The 5080 is a pentium d while a 5160 is a core 2 chip. The core 2 chips are much faster clock for clock and the ht doesn't help much.

Why? There are reasons why things are given out for free because that is really old, the oldest stuff even worth anything are the xeon 54xx but even then a newer pentium would probabbly run faster.

Yeah okay, just making sure that you weren't trying to run very intense programs on them because those xeons are not too great, but have virtulization support, so have fun playing around with some vms, and stuff.
