Hey im planning on upgrading my gpu from a r9 280x to either a gtx 1080 , dual rx 480s (when they come out) or a 980ti. I live in the uk so a gtx 1080 would cost £600 Which is a little over $850 Whereas dual rx480s would cost £400 which is $575 and the 980ti would cost £400-£500. At the current moment i am not sure what to upgrade to. As the 980ti is slightly older than the other two cards would it become obsolete in less then 5 years?

Always go for the single card solution. Crossfire wasn't used in that test and is not supported by every game. But if you're at 1080p you should be getting a single 480 anyway. Maybe a 1070 if you play mostly demanding games.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Just wait for the 1080's to get sorted on price. They are having stocking issues so the price is high. I would think about what you want to use the GPU for? Editing - I would go for cuda over openCL. and Gaming - Nvidia again. Honestly wait for the rx 480 to be release and see them in crossfire against the 1080 and 980ti, this should also bring down the price based on the performance!

I wouldn't say the GTX 580 is exactly obsolete, it wont run games at the highest settings but will do the job for the most part

But best cost wise would be getting a 1070 now and selling it and purchasing a new card when you aren't getting desirable performance out of it. That is always the best path to go

I would be using it mainly for vr and 4k games at high settings

We dont really know a lot about the rx 480 because its not out yet. We have no idea on game performance, only firestrike (correct me if im wrong please), we also dont know about VR. so can we all agree, to just wait until it comes out then make another thread, asking on the best decision. Unless youre super desperate for the summer holidays in 5 weeks or 3 weeks depending on youre school.

All the firestrike scores are leaks, another words useless. But we do have AMD's VR benchmark from E3, which has it under a 390.
