I'm building a new rig and i am debating wether to get a quad or six core CPU. My friend thinks that a 3.5Ghz 4 core is better than a 3.9 Ghz 6 core, beacease you get more Ghhz per core. they are stock clocks i will probably over-clock if i can. can you please tell me whick option is better.

the two cores in quistion are:

AMD FX-6350 3.9GHz 6-Core Processor

Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor

if there is a better equivalent to eather, please let me know

a 3.5 Ghz 4 core has 4 3.5 Ghz cores

and the 3.9 Ghz 6 core has 6 3.9 GHz cores

the frequencies arn't spit

An Intel quad-core will out perform a hex-core from AMD...so...you should be a bit more specific of which chips we're talking about (AMD or Intel). Clock speed also isn't end all in how a CPU performs - even within the same brand. It all depends what generation and architecture.

Clock speed is not all there is to performance and you can't compare different cpus by their frequencies.

Also, when a frequency is specified, it refers to all of the cores running at that speed.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

It depends what in, and how the world changes, the athlon 64 back in the day used to beat a pentium 4 with its own hyper-threadeding, but that was when everything was single threaded, things change.

im a big advocate of fx8320's, they are plenty good enough for gaming....with fraps....while streaming or converting files all at the same time, even if the architecture is 20% (or whatever) behind having double the threads help. id have a q6600@3ghz OC over an athlon x2 @3.5ghz.

if you do gaming AND NOTHING ELSE sure get a 3570k and overclock.

id say an 8320 (with a hyper 212 and a 8+1/8+2 power phase) is the way to go, an fx6300 isnt as good value though its still an option for the £100 mark, and dont bother with quad cores anymore (they are still enough, especially when most mmorpgs and the like are only optimised for dual core)

if i was buying intel id go 3930k if i had the cash, if not 6 core i7 980x or 3770k....

at the end of the day set a budget for your cpu and buy the best you can (i can see a new thread coming), if you only have to stretch a few wuid more to buy a vastly better product its probably worth it.
