I'm looking to build an inexpensive PC for 3d rendering, 3d simulations, and potentially some video editing. I am planning on overclocking an i5 6600k. i want to keep the cost as low as possible, i am on a budget ($700). Give me your thoughts and opions on it and what could be done to make it better with out impacting the cost.Screenshot 2016-06-14 at 3.55.52 PM.png

I would say that you get a better GPU, something like a 960/970, only because the difference is pretty major.

I mean, what's your budget? Do you want to overclock just for the sake of overclocking or what?

Although that PSU is making me cringe slightly inside (unless it's a grey labeled CX), you should wait for the RX480...even a reference card would be good...more power for same monies is a guld idea :). Yes, the xeon is better for your situation (OCing in a way really is a gimmick for a i5 in my opinion).

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

That lacks a GPU. And that CPU does not have an iGPU.

It's the grey unit. I always check. And yeah, worth waiting for the 480. Forgot to put that into my post.

I know but with Polaris immintley being released it would be best to wait until then to see how, if OP doesn't choose to get polaris it will push down the prices of maxwell.

Then you should add that to your post. And doesn't really make sense not to go with Polaris. With the node shrink, it's practically guaranteed that it's going to do better than Maxwell.

Yes, but some people may prefer Nvidia and if they are using more CUDA based programs that don't support OpenGL then a maxwell card would be better.

would there be any benefit for getting a newer xeon 1230 with newer architecture (14nm instead of 22nm) ?

No as you'd need a more expensive board and with AMD having little presence in the CPU market the IPC difference is meh.
