I just ordered a e3-1220 v5 and an Asrock e3v5 ws motherboard and I don't know how much I can oc on the bclk in order to oc the cpu. Any predictions on how much mhz I can get on the bclk?

Don't expect too much. Probably at most 105 bclk before it starts messing up. Xeons were meant for multi threaded workloads, whereas the small increase in bus clock isn't going to be significant.

The only thing I can say is cross your fingers.

It really depends because of the silicon lottery. You may have a great overclocker or a total fail.

You probabbly will not get to terribly high of an oc, and you might want to try to underclock your ram so that it doesn't cause stability issues, but a 6600k and z170 is what you really need to oc, bclk can just be a pain because it adjusts more frequencies then just the cpu.

First posting and already getting replys! Thanks guys. Also would the e3-1220 v5 outperform the i5-6500 and 6600k at stock clocks because of the ht?

*cough* Except with Skylake where certain motherboard manufacturers moved the BCLK generator off the CPU therefore you can overclock it to like 165 and it's still fine.

Does it still mess with ram frequency?

depends on what you do with the system. if you're gaming, then no, as that requires single core performance.

if video editing/server hosting, then yes.

No a 6600 would be better as the 1220v5 lacks hyperthreading

Im gonna do a bit of both so I think i made a good decision. Plus the xeon was cheaper than the i5

The 1230v5 has hyperthreading so it will perform like an i7.

I dont really need that much computational power in all honesty so I guess I'm fine
