I understand some do it for money (CSGO)

But there are serial cheaters, and lot's of them.

 

Video below is a guy failing to inject cheats into CSGO, but clearly has hacks for all his other multiplayer games.

 

 

I don't understand it, do you?

let us all remember now and today, computers do not like abuse, they will fight back!

Usually they are free. My friend bought 20 accounts and cheated all night on CSGO and live streamed it so I could watch. I don't blame him CSGO is a terrible game

Most of the time, people just get bored of the vanilla experience. People cheat for the reasons that people hack, the same reasons that people grief, but it's also the same reason why modding communities are so popular and diverse. Minecraft is a pretty good example, but other games like Ark, etc. 

 

You're wrong by the way, too, about it taking away the fun. You're right that it takes away the skill, but that isn't the point for cheaters. Most cheaters just do it because again, they need a new experience, and new experiences with something familiar can be fun, albeit not for the reasons that vanilla clients are.

I despise all multiplayer cheating because the cheater's version of "fun" completely ruins mine which I paid for. I rarely encounter cheaters in most of the games I play (and I DONT play CSGO LOL) but in Minecraft literally HALF the players will have some sort of cheating mod installed. It's SO bad in Minecraft that you kind of have to cheat to make sure you aren't behind literally almost every other player in gamemodes such as Factions. I do at least have SOME sense of honor so you would never catch me with some sort of combat hack like aimbot or kill aura but I'll use subtle ones such as xray or chest/player esp (wallhack basically)

 

But I would stop cheating in Minecraft if I could know for sure that no one else was

I don't understand cheating either.  I have no problem if someone does it in single player but it infuriates me in multiplayer.  Sadly cheating is not only a part of video games.  It is in all aspects of life.  Heck, how often do people cut you off while driving instead of waiting their turn.  There are people with and without personal integrity.  Those without, generally take advantage of those with integrity.

Are you talking about cheats or scripts/injections? Because cheats are fine, scripts/injections that give an explicit unfair advantage over others in a competitive multiplayer game is not fine as they are in violation of the ToS for use of online play.
