Compressed air a bad idea?

I really need to clean my PC and I don't have any cans of air. I want to use an air compressor but I came across a forum where someone had posted the following:

 

"Unless you have a dry filter for your air line you will be introducing moisture to your components, not a good idea since this can cause a short when you fire up the computer. If you do have a dry filter then you are running the risk of generating static electricity, another really bad idea. There's only one other thing that comes to mind in conjunction with this that is worse, that is to use a vacuum cleaner to clean out the case, this is a great electrostatic generator.

I would suggest purchasing a retail can of air. The compressed air is a noble gas which will not generate static electricity when used."

 

I have no idea whether or not my compressor has a dry filter. How would I check if I do? Is the moisture from an air compressor enough to do any damage to my PC?

 

I would love to be able to use an air compressor without worrying about doing any damage. I mean, its unlimited air! So if someone could confirm this or clear things up that would be great. Thanks!

The air that is in compressed air technically isn't air. It's used because it doesn't create moisture or static electricity.

Drain your compressor with each use, and it's not a problem. That's what the little valve

On the bottom of your compressor is for. I turn mine on, let it build up pressure for a bit, then open it and let the condensation out into a container (it can have oils and rust in it).

 

Hasn't hurt my PC, my moms, or my sisters over the last 5 years. Although I still keep at least a foot distance between the PC and end of the nozzle, just in case. (at 100 psi., with a decent nozzle, it's close enough)

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

I know people are going to have conflicting ideas on this, but I've used compressors to clean systems for years. It's not putting out enough moisture to matter. Just remember to open the drain valve after each use. Also, don't clean it and immediately plug it up and turn it on. I've always waited a while to be safe.

 

Generally with my compressor, I have to focus the air spray directly and extremely close to a surface to see any moisture build up of any significance. You would damage components with just the air in that situation any way.

 

The big thing you have to watch out with is pressure. I recommend using a pistol grip air gun so that you can more easily regulate the amount of air pressure you are firing in. Too much pressure at too close a distance can wreck fans and other components. I know, I've wrecked a couple of fan bearings when I was less experienced. Stay back, watch your pressure.

Unless you have a huge one you will be fine. The large ones, like really big spit out some oil sometimes

The great thing about water is that it dries. Even if your compressor does spit out some moisture while cleaning, just walk away for an hour or so before closing everything up and turning your PC back on. As long as you confirm beforehand that the compressor's in good shape and not spitting out something other than minuscule amounts of water vapor, you're good.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

You only need to worry about the oil. Do some research and see if your compressor is an oil free compressor.

 

I use my compressor all the time and have never once had an issue with moisture and I live in a very humid climate in the summer. As long as your components are not below dew point then there is no issue, even then you only need to wait for it to dry.
