Why no multi core gpu?

When cpus couldn't break the 5ghz limit, manufacturers moved to multi cores and so far it has worked great.  Multi cpus are prevalent on the server world but not feasible for home use.

 

Why is it that multi core gpu not being explored?  I understand there have been a few dual cards on one board attempts.  They have been problematic and not too enticing with their $1,500 price tags.  Not to mention SLI or CF outperforms them for less.

You're right.  I didn't look at it in that regard.

So what is the point of dual chips on one card then?  They seem to be a very costly proposition.

They can't build a better chip at that point, so they just slap two of their best chips on one PCB and that's it.

Gpus have lots of little cores in them unlike a cpu which has a few powerful cores.

 

Ex, the 870m in my laptop has 1344 "cores"

Mine has 512 cores, way more than my XEON.

A GPU actually has many many cores.  Each "CUDA" core in an nvidia GPU is a core in the computing sense.  The difference is that a CPU has a few cores with complex logic units, but a GPU has many many cores but very simple logic units.  In certain applications, each configuration has its own advantages disadvantages.

Probably because they are using the same chip dies, and if a board has room, why not?  If you want a larger chip, you have to redesign the lithography, make new photomasks etc.  More time for engineering, more complications in the fabrication = greater costs.  It is far more cost effective to keep every chip similar and produce in mass amounts.  That's why we have "binning."

shame I only have 4 CPU cores to run them all
