1070 Paired with Freesync Monitor

ok, so I want to game at high fps, 1440p with a 1070, however I don't want to pay over $1000 for a 1440p g-sync monitor.  My question is, will the Benq XL2730Z be compatible with the card and able to output higher than 60fps? (144hz monitor, so I would like to be able to get higher than 60 fps).

 

 

I've been trying to research and watch linus's videos but I'm still pretty confused regarding monitor selection and the whole free sync, g-sync and v sync stuff....  basically want to know if buying the monitor at a sale price (599) to pair with a 1070 is a good idea...

You can't use Freesync with an Nvidia GPU. You can still take advantage of 144hz, though.

Well, free sync only works with AMD cards. So if you don't care about frame syncing it will work.

ok, but will it still have a refresh rate of 144hz without freesync turned on?

Frame syncing just makes sure that your GPU isn't trying to output a higher amount of frames per second faster than your monitor can refresh the display and bring on a new frame. A 144z monitor can refresh the screen 144 times per second. It will still refresh the monitor 144 times, but will not even try to limit the amount of frames displayed.

So it will only look good if you are getting in the realm of 144 fps.

Yes. Get a high refresh rate monitor only and pass on the adaptive sync technology if you can't afford a GSync monitor.

but I was confused about the buffers or ranges he was talking about... do those only apply when you have free sync enabled?

OK. When freesnyc is enabled, any FPS between around 80-144 (or whatever he said in the video) will look silky smooth and there will be no tearing. With freesync disabled (i.e when you have a Nvidia GPU) anything really close to 144 will look good.
