Why is Youtube/BBC iPlayer buffering on 55Mbps connection?

I don't understand this.

I'm using an ethernet cable to my PC and all the speed-tests from various sites consistently gives me no less than 50Mbps download and 17Mbps upload.

Yet, when i go to watch a Youtube video, it often buffers even at 480P...

I've tried a Mac downstairs that's also reporting the exact same speed across several speed-testing programs and also has buffering issues.

I'm also experiencing buffering at 720P over Wifi when trying to stream BBC Iplayer to our Free-view player on the TV.

Why is this!?

cap and  throttling are not the same. cap is the total amount of data you can download. Throttling is where your isp slows your connection based on the number of users.

 

See you're not special your a sheep in the heard and you all want to get the grass but to eat the grass you have to go through a gate (your ISP's local hub) more sheep want to eat the slower you get your grass.

This effect also happens when a large number of users all turn their PC's on. like at 6pm when everyone is home from work.

Right click in youtube and select technical details (or something like that) and look at the connection speed. I have a 100/100 connection and i usually get 40 000kbps. Sometimes i get this same buffering issue and it is a bad server, with a connection speed of 5000 kbps.

that means nothing. they can throttle you during peak hours and such. Time warner Cable is notorious for this and i have the same problem

They are throttling you or you do not have 5Mbit/s or the uplink to google's AS is saturated

Sorry, I wasn't clear.

 

There is neither a download or upload cap on my plan, nor is there any throttling, or a fair usage policy.

Besides, if I was being throttled at all, I wouldn't have been able to download GTA V at no less than 7.0 MB/s in the evening for more than 4 hours without any drop in connection speed.

At the moment it's about 35,000-40,000 Kb/s.

I'm guessing it drops when I'm having buffering issues. I'll see what it is when I'm having issues.

like I said its most likely due to large number of in your area.

But it just seems to swap from video to video. One video it will say 40,000 Kbps and then another video a minute later shows 2,000 Kbps

log into your router and check what the noise level is on your line. This is mine currently

when your connection drops in speed open netflix's fast.com if it shows a low speed then your being throttled . this is for comast peps but should work for you .  if you use alot of data 1tb + you most likely been lumped into the extremely high data pile . if they truly dont throttle or any other shaddy stuff give them a call something may have broke or is breaking , i fried a chip in the server center right near my house two months ago  a few calls to my isp and a few times they came out it was fixed . your line stats look good but im really good at reading them just was comparing to mine

I have done speed tests when it's buffering and am still consistently getting 54Mbps

I have done at least 30 speed tests and none have ever dropped below 50Mbps even at the worst of buffering periods.

the fast.com is different it catches your isp if it is throttling you  they allow all speed test  test get max speed to make the customer think they are getting what they are paying for . but really are just screwing them from behind

I always use Fast.com (the netflix one) and have been for the last couple of weeks. I only used speedtest.net so I could share the link to the result. I get the same speeds with both.

Get a vpn and see if it is still slow. If it isn't sue them. This is against net neutrality laws.

ok so fast is showing high speeds either its something is breaking in your network or isp or your isp added them to the exclude list like speed test is done . give them a call they can see if its a line problem ect. or use tunnelbear for the free 500mb trial and if its normal speeds then do as sam said sue them

Hmmm...wonder if this is related to my problem of EVERYTHING on youtube is FUCKING LOADING AT 360P, on my phone, tablet, PC, lappy ect. I know I can just change it but come on auto, I'm sure you can choose at lease 720p with a 71/19 connection attached for you to use...
