Is it safe to force 75 Hz on my laptop's screen?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

It's not 'safe' and could break the screen.

I agree with Auxafly, it's not really worth it.

I wouldn't go above 65Hz especially as it's a laptop and if you break the screen it will be VERY expensive to replace.

I just wanted to know if it would be safe to force 75 Hz on 1024x768 when playing CS:GO on my laptop since I don't see anything that would let me create custom resolutions in NVIDIA's control panel.

personally, i wouldn't try cause it's a laptop, besides, i doubt you can tell the difference between 75hz or 60hz

I don't think there's any risk in trying. Something like EVGA's PrecisionX reverts such a change if you don't confirm it, so if it doesn't work, you'll just roll back to 60Hz.

Although you'll be completely unable to overclock if the monitor is connected by an analog connector such as VGA or DVI (not dual link).

Forcing something when its not designed to do it is a huge is taking a huge risk. If your not fully aware of the outcome then personally I would leave it be.

A menace to the scammer world. They hate me wasting their time when they are conning the innocent and giving to the idiots.

Acturally there is a great difference from 60Hz to 75Hz..

But with that said, it will degrade the lifespan on your screen and you get the risk of a dead screen, and bacause of it is a laptop it would be more expensive to replace the screen rather then check if the outputs on it could carry 120+hz from the hdmi, DVI og DP-port (what there is on your laptop) and then buy a second hand monitor..

I was planning to upgrade to a desktop soon. but I overclocked my dying lenovo y510p to 81hz.  I was willing to risk it, but it is amazing. It just made me more hyped for my 144hz monitor.

If you have the ability to force a custom resolution, sure. If you aren't able to do so in NCP and have Optimus, you need to do it through the Intel software... which to my knowledge does not work. I know they acknowledged it was broken (after many years) but I do not know if they released a patch.

Why exactly are you playing CS:GO at 1024 x 768 by the way?

It's about as safe as doing it on a desktop, as long as one follows the proper procedures. I don't understand why laptops are considered ultra fragile things that will burst into flames and break if they so much as venture slightly above stock for more than 15 seconds.

Laptop panels are generally actually EXTREMELY cheap to replace. $75 is a rather average price for a laptop panel. $150 would be an expensive panel. Even my 120Hz 1080p panel is only around $120 USD.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

This is definitely a personal opinion.

I cannot tell the difference and i've played at 75fps many times before (and game at a solid 60fps on my own setup)

It's more about the difficulty of sourcing and installing the parts by ones self.

Unless OP has the knowledge required to install the screen himself (which can be pretty difficult), he will need to pay someone to do it for him, which will greatly increase the cost.

Yes there are a number of guides available, but the process could be quite intimidating to a first timer.

Also for the sake of a small OC, $75 is a lot of money (at least it is to me).

In OP's case it could be of benefit for CSGO however in my opinion the risk to reward ratio is too small for me to recommend.

No, i've played on a friend's monitor many times which supports an overclock of 75Hz although only at a slightly lower resolution.

I forget the name, I think it's an Asus model, it has some red on it.

Also I have occasionally overclocked my own monitor to 74Hz and didn't notice any difference, hence why I opted to stay at 60hz.

Even so, if the 75Hz OC is unstable it'll simply throw artifacts or black-screen off and then it'll force itself back to the default 60Hz. Even if I have a direct windows problem and I reboot my screen gets tossed from 120Hz to 60Hz, and I have to re-set 120Hz, even though my screen is a 120Hz native panel.

It wouldn't kill his panel at all, especially not such a small increase. I'd be much more concerned about whether the rest of his system could run the game at 75FPS if he has a system with more garbage cooling like an Acer or HP.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
