Weird Builds - The Underground Gamer

I'll be giving away some Kingston HyperX memory from my store for the most imaginative and fun answers (shipping to US, UK & Europe only). It's a super weird build scenario, but I hope it tantalizes the adventurous among us.

Details about the memory will be provided towards the closing date, as I don't wish to spam the LTT forums with my store links.

The closing date/judging date will be 17th June 2016, at 17:00GMT.

The Scenario

You are trapped underground, beneath thousands of feet of concrete with no way of getting out. All refreshments and internet connectivity are provided such that you will live the rest of your life down here without any reasonable health concerns. But there's one catch - you have a finite amount of surplus electrical energy to last you this time. We'll assume you will live for at least 20 more years, but you will never be able to acquire more hardware from elsewhere once your initial build is complete. You have £2,000 available to spend, but the only website you are able to purchase from is OcUK. You can buy as much as you want, leave components unopened and bring those with you too. But you'll never ever be able to acquire new hardware after this. You'll also need a monitor, a mouse, a keyboard too! Anything you need to function - but a Cat5e cable with decent internet will be provided to you, so you don't need wi-fi.

You'll have a 5.25MWh battery to last you. Once it's ran out - it's ran out. Might seem like a lot, but if you left your computer on 24/7 for 20 years, your computer should pull an average of 30W from the wall for the battery to last. Leaving it on 12 hours a day on average? 60W Leaving it on 6 hours a day on average? 120W... You get the jist.

Tips

  • Some components might not last 20 years, what might you need to hold extra of to make sure you don't have a useless PC later on?
  • What might games even need in 20 years time? Will you try to play them?
  • When might support end for your selected components, perhaps consumer lines might not cut the bill?
  • A 300W PSU at 100% load will pull more than 300W from the wall. :) Physics says so.
  • Could energy be recycled? It could get awfully hot down there.

Final Words

Sure it sounds like I'm bat-sh*t crazy, but I thought this was a cool concept, cool enough that I'm willing to give away sticks of memory for the best answers. I'm genuinely curious how people might tackle this problem, it'll also be interesting to see people make a conscious decision on power consumption when choosing a build.

To make things simple, you can just pop down the part numbers for every item in a list, I've got a clever little piece of software that will check it against current pricing.

I'd just make a computer capable of decent browser use and go on the forums and police/emergey services sites and have them Find me and dig me out, so a PC of good GPU location so they can find me easy.

Then i I can live my life how I want, I'd probably end my self having to be in a hole for 20 years. Kek (not a entry)

Good luck getting police and emergency services to believe you are beneath thousands of feet of concrete ;)

Yup, definitely 5.25MWh - I've updated the post, thanks.

Guess I would go with a laptop like perhaps this one. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-rog-gl552vw-dm201t-15.6-fhd-ips-intel-i7-6700hq-nvidia-gtx960m-2gb-gddr5-gaming-laptop-lt-228-as.html and a spare one. Buy 2 or 3 mice with the rest of the money.

That picture is fallout so we are in the future and there are molecular relays so I would get kit to make a relay module and be out. :)

I would actually get a notebook with a good performance per watt ratio, so I can get high FPS but still low wattage.

I would also waste as little energy as possible, not too much battery drain for longevity, but when it's charging, the computer is off.

I would actually have very little games, mostly the ones without end (ie Minecraft) and that don't drae much power (use the same example).

I would use standard keyboard and laser mouse for less power draw, and since I don't have sunlight, I would keep brightness reasonably low.

Thats not much money if you want mouse monitor keyboard and spares of psu, motherboard and ram or processor or GPU..

I'd go for this for a full build.. assuming I get a desk + chair too :P Only use the HDD's when data is needed and gpu when gaming (use Igpu). Find the sweet spot for clocks and power and run baby run. (or go for an i3 and 1070 and get spares)

Spreadsheet for shopping cart: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L2HfAEPkO4cJMXjY65kUHpNPMI4oVEr3mzRvrmTyt-s/edit?usp=sharing

Final price: 1833.36 GBP as of June 2nd 2016

The idea:

Because power is on a limited supply, I thought it better to have two PCs instead of just one power hungry machine.

BUILD 1 is to be used for light tasks, such as browsing, watching movies and so on, it having a lower overall power consumption.

BUILD 2 will be the gaming machine, which has a self explanatory purpose.

On the peripheral side, most items would be purchased in double quantity because we're talking 20 years here. I am well aware that the PSU for BUILD 1 is MASSIVE overkill, but we're looking for a high rating.

BUILD 2 is what I'd call a decent gaming rig, although I am well aware that it would be obsolete within even 10 years, not to mention 20.

At any given point only one of the PCs would be running, connected to a single monitor.

I'm also well aware that I didn't factor in an OS, but you can see there's about 166 GBP left that can go towards an OS and slight adjustments to the builds.

I'm going to get my math cap on in the following days to get a rough estimate on the power consumption according to my own schedule and see how long the power supply would last for me. I'll update the spreadsheet when I have the numbers.

So there's the plan but here is the reasoning behind it.

The pc itself is quite energy efficient with the 6500 TDP of 65 w and the new 1080's power efficiency. And why get a pc case if you are the only person that's going to touch the pc? High efficiency PSU for less power loss, samsung 850 EVO because of it's reliability and speed. And non ''k'' cpu with an h110 board because overclocking isn't exactly optimized for a build with low TPD.

Keyboard and mice are pretty straight forward; cherry mx switches will last longer than i'll survive and the mice is just my personal favorite.

But now the big question, why the 43'' 4k monitor??? That thing is huge and is going to draw lot's of power. But there is a solution for that, by lowering the brightness of the screen it will require less power and the room or cave I'll be sitting in won't exactly be bright, so no problemo my friendo.

But again why the 43'', are you mad? .. Maybe, but if I'm going to spend the rest of my days alone in a dark cave I might as well get the best corn watching experience i've ever had. The same goes for the soundbar.

This wasn't a super serious entry but I would think it's kind of realistic, at least to some degree. Thank you once again for hosting this ''competition'' (yeah this isn't a competition since my entry has already won ;) ) but anyways have a good one!

I would personally just buy around 3 chrome books, we use those for schook for 4 years, so I have no doubt that they could last at least 7 years, especially since batteries wouldn't really be a concern. I would use that for almost everything, and except for gaming. For gaming, I would likely just buy an Xbox and a tv. I know, I'm a art of the PC MASTERRQCE, but the power effeciency and cost of an Xbox would putway wasting power on a gaming PC. I'm on mobile right now so I can't crunch the numbers but a cheap 720p tv, xbone, and a couple chrome books should be either budget

I would chose The Sulon Q form AMD (i know it is nt from overclockers UK but it isnt even out yet so.....). I heard that it uses a low power APU so i am guessing it would use 30W in total?. Need nothing else needed except for mouse, keyboard and controller charged by headset and also phone (for non-vr moments) might use 5kWH. Guessing peripherals adds 10W (tell me if you think this is wrong). Buy 2 of Each thing (price unknown of sulon Q but guessing 700 dollars). You can get 16 Hours of VR Gaming per day for 20 years with Sulon plus extra time on phone if wanted. That would probably be your best choice.

what do you think

This Document is the best I could come up with :/

I tried to go for redundancy...4 Powersupplies, 3 monitors, etc. You don't know what is going to go on down there. Plus I put in an Xbox 360 controller, keyboard, mice, and some cheap alternatives in case those break. Also a chair so that you don't sit on the ground all day, and a mouse pad. I couldn't find anything to solve the power problem, so this person just can't play for like half the day...oh well. I choose an APU because those are generally pretty low power, with the 7650k at 95 Watts, and an R9 380x to go with it. I was originally planning on going with an I5, but to have multiples of those would be really expensive plus with this I am effectively getting 5 GPUs, even if three of them are on the CPU and are lower powered then normal. This person would mostly be playing free to play games, but they are murmurous, including Tera, Robocraft, and LOL. I'm sure someone will beat this, I really don't need/want memory anyways and wanted to try this out for fun.

Bump--I think this is an interesting challenge, and someone could easily beat me, especially by lowering power use, etc.

Power isn't an overwhelming issue really, since your cat5e can give you 25W of power, which on the long run can give you a loooot of time more if you use that capability to your advantage!

The Scenario

You are trapped underground, beneath thousands of feet of concrete with no way of getting out. All refreshments and internet connectivity are provided such that you will live the rest of your life down here without any reasonable health concerns.

I hate to be that guy (Just kidding: I love to be that guy look at my title) but without any sunlight, humans can't really process vitamin D sufficiently and that is a reasonable health concern.

Other than that I would put together a rig however the bulk of my budget would go to something like many reliable, power saving devices that can be stored away safety and a dozen of kindles.

I can have just as much fun reading books and would spend like a tiny fraction of the power that I'd spend gaming or something like that. So it would involve some sort of e-ink device and something very reliably to store book data.

I'd think a tablet of some sort would be better than a desktop or a laptop. Tablets consume even less power than laptops and can do at least some things a laptop can.

I'd say iPad Pro with keyboard cover or Nexus 9 with keyboard cover. Not sure if getting through lots of concrete is possible but maybe there'd be some hope at an excavator or something getting you out. You could get by with games that exist on iOS or Android but not sure if they'd be able to last for like 20 years. I suppose if you got a lot of games now before the device goes obsolete. If you have internet, just be sure to have netflix and maybe have someone let you use their netflix sub or something. Though again not sure if Netflix or Youtube would let, say a 20 year old version of their app connect to their servers or not.

But this isn't an entry either since it sure seems more of extreme low power gaming PC or something like that.
