Hello all. Basically I have been tasked with rebuilding a computer for my girlfriends aunt. She does a lot of photo and video editing in Adobe and I want to make sure she will get a competent computer that will have a decent life span. Her main goal is to have a smaller more portable rig. I am unaware of her budget so I have done some mediocre research and stumbled upon Linus' ($150 MOBO/CPU/RAM) combo with server parts gave me a good idea. I want to find out what the best plan of attack is and the drawbacks of server components in these types of rigs opposed to gaming rigs.  So I have quite a view questions. 

- What are some recommended GPU's for intense Adobe workloads?

- Will server parts like the Intel Xeons and ECC memory preform well enough for this application ? If so what kind of Xeon and what kind of ram (DDR/Capacity/MHz)?

- Will the server parts crap out months or even a year or two down the road ? 

- Would I be better off going with regular desktop parts and just working within her budget? Whatever it may end up being. 

- Anybody who has this type of work load (Somebody in Linus media group for example) what is the area I need to be in spec wise. Like am I okay with an i3 3600 or do I wanna aim more for an i7 6700k

- Any other recommendations for this build would be much appreciated.

Im a graphic designer who spends a lot of time in Photoshop, From my experience, mainstream GPUs didn't really affect my workflow too much in Photoshop, not to the extent that the CPU did, although granted I did not test with any Quadro/Tesla/Firepro cards. I noticed limited tangible improvements from Intergrated graphics, to a GTX950, to GTX980 to GTX Titan X whereas I noticed heavy increases going from an i3 to i5 to i7 using multiple different computers at work. This leads me to recommend more money focussed on an Intel Core i7 or Xeon CPU rather than the latest and greatest GPU.

Dual E5-2670's will give you 16 cores and 24 threads for less than $150, which should work nicely in CPU-intensive workloads. A dual socket LGA-2011 (not 2011-3) will set you back at the most 400 dollars. As for RAM and GPU, I have to look into it. Chances are that the components will be fine, and if something happens, you didn't end up spending 2000 to 10000 dollars on a Xeon. What's the budget?

I would recommend getting her budget before going too far down this rabbit hole. It could be pretty high allowing you to go for all new parts which will have a better chance of lasting longer, or it could be really low where you have to hit the used market for most or all the parts.

So, you wanna get some Xeons. They are great for video editing. More cores will be better. People are quite aiming for 771 Xeons but get 1366 ones, since they are newer and more efficent.

For the durability, they should last some time.

If you are on desktop side however, try and get a good i7. Any i7 will do really, since they have HT.

HT doesn't help based on experience. I thought that the E5-2670 is a good idea is it's a Sandy Bridge-EP CPU and does 3.2GHz.

Sorry to get i to this post, but.... What motherboard would you suggest for a dual E5 2670?
