I wouldn't call a 380 or 380x 'futureproof'

You might be able to score a cheap, used 970 or 390 soon, since the 1080 released

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

Remember to quote people if you want them to see your reply!

"Future proof". Funny term. It refers to a state that does not exist, especially at that price point.

Your best bet in that price range would be an R9 380X, which can be had for around $230-240, or a 380, which can be had for less. Neither one is really a 1440p card, nor is the 960. They're great 1080p cards, but asking them to play modern games at decent settings at 60fps in 1440p is asking too much.

You're probably best off holding out for another few weeks, at which point used 970s will start to pop up in that price range.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

i just want 25-30 fps on med settings i don't play games like crysis on high ,so do you expect this much fps from this card (380x)on 1440p , if yes then i'll be proceding on this card

R9 380X can get you even more than 30 fps on 1440p with medium settings.

Yea, I forgot about Polaris. Wait for that. $300 cards will give you supposedly 980 performance with low wattage. Don't splurge just yet...  380X is old news man.

"Although the R9 380X is based on the latest Graphics Core Next architecture, at its roots you will find a graphics card that is almost four years old now, the venerable Radeon HD 7970. Debuting back in January 2012, the 7970 ran for a cool $550 and was at the time AMD’s flagship part."

"That all looks great for the R9 380X until you look at its memory subsystem, which sees the 384-bit memory bus severely downgraded to 256-bit"  So I guess it's not even as good as the 7970 in some aspects, ROTFL"

depends how long you want to keep if for. Nothing is future proof. It'll last 2 years I would expect at the res your are running, will you be ready to upgrade again by that point?

I look at future proofing along the lines of will Hardware A last long enough in my mind before I'm ready to upgrade again to hardware B. it's a tough decision as sadly, I can't see into the future.
