XFX R9 390 (R9-390P-8DF6) Performance

As I believe at least a few of my posts have started, I would like to say I apologize if this is in the wrong section, has already been answered, or is in general an unnecessary question.

If anyone else has the same card as me or knows from some other method, would I be able to get good framerates at 1440p in most games, or should I upscale 1080p? I intend to get a 1440p monitor, but only because those are the only ones I know of with Freesync.

Thy hath sinneth, and in thy life thou hast fallen to an unholy, unspeakable level of humanity. Thou hast given into your basest needs. And suffered many years under thine Satan-box. However, if thine be willing, as thy hast show yourself to be, thy can ascendeth into thy glorious fold of the glorious church. Go well, my brother, may your temps be low and your frames high. ~ MrDynamicMan

Yeah you can play at 1440p no problemo on that card and even if it does get a little strained in some games (crysis, GTA or Witcher 3 perhaps) you can just roll the AA or textures back a little because of the res and still have an awesome gaming experience!

Used the card a few times now for work!

Peace! xD

Beautiful. Thank you very much. I noticed GTA V needed a few of the advanced settings tuned down a bit to get mostly stable 60 FPS (at 1366x768!). Is that my CPU, a Core i5 4460, or are those settings just really intense?

VERY similar to THIS XFX R9-390...

The R9-390(X) in general holds up relatively okay at 1440p gaming.

The recent driver updates pushes it neck-and-neck or slightly better than the GTX 980.

What monitor are you thinking of getting? I'm in the market for a new 1440p monitor as well but was hoping to find a reduced price second hand one on the internet somewhere but the UK is so limited in terms of used parts...

I have a strange desire to be overly specific with what parts I can. For example, I've written my mouse as a 'Logitech M-RBH113' rather than a Logitech G7.

I was thinking about the ASUS MG279Q. It's rather expensive, but it has everything I could want from a monitor. It'll be one heck of a late birthday gift...

Hey! There's nothing wrong with that.

The review sample in the the  http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/09/21/xfx_r9_390_double_dissipation_8gb_video_card_review#.V0ewkJErJaQ  seems to be an older revision of your R9-390P-8DF6. The card, physically, is identical (same cooler, PCB [?], and Clock speeds).

It also looks like XFX revised your R9-390P-8DF6 to R9-390P-8256 so it is "Radeon VR Ready."

Thats a mixture of GTA being a texture hungry SOB and the demands on your CPU xD The 4460 is probably bang in the middle of the i5 gaming range so GTA really pushes the upper limits of it. Have a look at a GTA performance guide online because you can actually make GTA look really good and play really smooth if you get the soup of setting just right... :)

I play GTA usually on my office PC and have got it down to perfection now, so perfect infact I'm scared to install anything new or update a driver haha And that is only a GTX 960 2GB!! And come to mention it a mid range non K i5 that I cant even remember right now... so great things are possible if you're willing to do the tweaking! B|

Yeah that is very nice. For years and years I always begrudged spending serious money on a decent screen... now have used so many for work I can see oh how wrong I was! I can't wait to get one at home!

I was originally planning to go with an Acer XG270HU or ASUS MG278Q, but I became more and more convinced I would be happier with an IPS. While I don't do any sort of professional work, I do sit at a lot of weird angles and I don't game competitively at all, so the slightly slower speeds don't bother me, not to mention they're slight.

Some nice screens there too but your needs are basically the same as mine so yes IPS will be the way I go also!

I'm more concerned with the comfort and strain on my eyes than getting the absolute truest reproduction of the frame rate anyway... I know some people swear they can see a difference between 60 and 120 but I think that's when they are next to each other and its a bit of a placebo effect anyway due to the limitations of our eyes (or so I have seen I can't exactly verify this right now.) Either way 60fps is 100000000% enough for gaming, even fast paced gaming!

It's plenty for me, especially since I don't play competitively at all. I have two big reasons, one only a little less important than the other, to get a new monitor. The first and foremost reason is resolution. I'm using a 1366x768 television! The second is Freesync. I've found that, since I've spent years instinctively setting all graphical settings to minimum, I'm rather sensitive to the smallest stutters and it truly bothers me when something isn't running smooth all the time (cough, cough, Fallout 4). I'm hoping Freesync will make it a little or a lot smoother.

Haha wow dude I think your priority should be fixing this screen problem once and for all! I don't know why your res didn't register in my brain as being low before xD

Freesync is great and has made a lot better for a lot of people but I always found with the right hardware adaptive or half adaptive vsync can really smooth things up as well.

Also sometimes no or just 2x MSAA is enough once running at 1080/1440 and rolling this back a little can add 10 or sometime even 15 fps instantly!

Its all a matter of budget, trial and error and personal optimisation at the end of the day!

And as for FO4 I've actually not had a single issue with it yet! Not a stutter or crash, no artefacts or glitches and always really great fps even on ultra settings! And this is with a... I think a 960 again but 4gb... and on this machine which has a 970! :P

I'm jealous. It could be an AMD vs. Nvidia thing, or my CPU (though I doubt it). I have the same problem as several other people; lag in cities...

Well I don't want to tread on any toes here or upset anyone but don't worry FO4 doesn't get any better at full frames, red or green team and if anything it becomes a bit worse, little less rough you know, too smooth! Actually that is a real point I'm making, do you find that it's just all a little... clean, smooth and bubbly looking? Especially for a post apocalyptic wasteland? I loved the gritty feel of new vegas and was so saddened to see the trailers for FO4 I knew straight away how it was going to look xD

I have heard of the problems but not really had much time to look over them mostly because I was happy with the performance I was getting in the game. I had basically finished the main quest by 44 hours of play time and even now I think i'm pretty done with it at just about 100 hours. Never mind there is always Elder Scrolls to look forward to next :D

I never really noticed that. I was too busy being awestruck that I was finally playing a fairly new game on a new system, something I've wanted for a long time now... However, I would say the stuttering for me is probably like the aesthetic for you. I wish it was different but try to tolerate it. Are you sure you didn't tweak anything to get smooth framerates? You don't even get framerate drops in cities?

Nope can't say I ever noticed a dip in performance in FO ever... I feel like I have to run some FO City Benchmarks now and get some fps data haha although I do tweak the operating systems and backends of systems for simulators for a living so maybe its some behind the scences magic I have done and not even knew about xD

Yeah it is such a great feeling when you get your new (and first) proper rig for the first time and you sit down to play a new title and it just... works! And works well! I will never forget that feeling haha that was back in 2008 for me now... I had a 512mb ATI Card I bought brand new and it was like every birthday coming at once :P

I couldn't help but find it funny when I saw an old post on some forum from 2008, where someone said 2 GB of RAM was a lot or something like that.

Yeah it sure was, I cant even think off of the top of my head of a 2GB card in 2008 let alone a 1GB... xD  I wish I could remember exactly what card it was I got but it was around £300 so about $440... All I know is that suddenly Dead Space was the pinnacle of realism and The sims 2 had never looked so good haha

Wow 8 years ago now...

Yep that was as well! I think I had 256mb in 2005 I know this much then I think it was just before getting the new graphics card that I got 512mb of ram and that was just phenomenal haha back in the days where adding another stick of ram made your PC 6x faster, or at least that's how it felt anyway!

Ahhh... seeing as we are on the subject I just had a memory of when I was able to play The sims 1 for the first time ever... It was 2003 and someone I knew (I was only 11) let me have their old 32mb stick of ram. Back home I had only 32mb currently so to double it was amazing. Anyway I printed off a diagram of a motherboard and how to install a RAM chip, got my dads permission and supervision (weird I know but nobody had ever opened the PC before) and away I went at doing my first ever upgrade! And that was it I was flying from there and finally got to play The Sims myself! I've hooked on PC's and gaming ever since! :'D
