[1080p144hz@max] GTX 970/R9 390 now, or wait for GTX 1070?

I'm buying the BenQ XL24 144hz monitor so I can't afford a GTX 1080 (or 980/Ti) at all and I won't be able to upgrade my system for at least 5 years.  

 

I'm looking to be able to play competitive games (i.e. CSGO, Dota 2, Battlefield 4, etc.) at 144+ FPS, hopefully max settings at 1024x768. And I want to be able to play the latest games on ultra or at least max settings (without AA) at 1080p resolution for at least 5 years. I will NOT be going beyond 1080p resolution AT ALL (or downsample).  

So will either of these cards last me 5 years on the latest games without any anti-aliasing or downscaling?  

 

My options are:  

1) Buy one of these now: GTX 970, R9 390, R9 390X (can barely afford 390X or 970)  
2) Wait and buy: GTX 1070  

 

What do you think I should do? I'm a little bit impatient as well since I can't run anything on my Intel HD 530 right now.

1070 will drop at 400$ for AF and 450$ for reference IIRC so if the 390/970 aren't possible either wait or pick a Polaris R9 480X for 300$

1070 for sure ! Faster stronger newer and cheaper than 980ti even after price drop that we all expect.

Not faster - 980 Ti is quite a bit ahead of it and matches a 1080 with a proper OC

I'd say 5 years at ultra may be a stretch even with the 1070. As graphics processing moves forward so does the requirements for ultra settings. Going off current trends the amount of performance you'll need to run most games in 5 years at ultra will be well over 2x closer to 3x. So you'll need a card 2.5 to 3 times better than the 970 in games. The only one that would be close is with the 1080.

We are yet to see that. In future mark bench that leaked (could be fake) 1070 won even over Titan.

Don't forget that Titan X overheats on the cooler it has - 980 Ti is 15% faster out of the box

Hmmm yeah and then we get a different video with 1080 closing the gap up to 980Ti SLi... something tells me people are getting wildy different results, it's a reference card anyway, the AIB ones will kick the shit out of the 980Ti's no doubt.

If you cant wait, can't play anything, the 970/390 are good cards.
But you'll probably reach those '5 years'  waiting and buying a newer product.

but that was reference for reference. So then it will be non-reference v non reference which will still be very close.

That video, unless you never watched? a 980Ti can't even make half of a second 980Ti jump from an OC, the 1080 made SLi 980Ti SLi numbers in that video.

take a second look the 1080 is hovering around 980 sli performance

I kinda trust TTL more than you or HWC - and honestly with Pascal being such a small alteration to Maxwell it's odd that it would perform 60% better than a 980 Ti. In all actuality the 980 Ti is only 10% behind (stock for stock) and 20% (OC for OC) so no, the 1070 is highly unlikely to beat the 980 Ti

historically AIB have only got 10% extra with the premium AIB cards getting 15-20% at the most and i dont see things changing
