Hello everybody hope you are in for a good laugh at my stupidity.

So I hate Windows 10 mostly for the fact that it is spying on me, cant stand it, want it gone. But alas I need it to play all of my pc games and vr games on. So I have the crazy idea to stuff windows into a tiny little cage of a vm and only use it to launch steam, gog, and oculus. The rest of my computing will be done through linux.

I'm sure it would be easier to use to separate pc's plugged into one monitor but where is the fun in that? I want an aio type solution here! that also means only one m/k set (that's where synergy comes in).

Anyway the list of parts I plan on using is as follows:

intel 5820K (4 threads for linux and 8 for windows)

-amd 490x (for windows) (maybe 2 in crossfire if unraid will let me)

-2x nvidea 710s (one for unraid and one for linux) --Getting the evga 710s because they will look nice

-32gb RAM (16 per vm, got to love chrome)

-2x 240gb ssds

-~3tb hdd storage

-other parts I haven't decided on yet

So tell me what yall think guys. Am I stupid or do you think I can pull it off?

thanks for the feedback, its appreciated.

running a vm will impact performance by a reasonable bit just fuck microsoft for spying on you,i am using windows 10 and i don't even bother about that. using windows 10 only will give you the best perofrmance possible. (don't really like Linux tho to much mac shit overpriced money milkers)

Can i suggest just using ubuntu/fedora/debian. They support all the same features, but are free. They will perform the same as they all use red hats kvm for running vm's.  You can also use the full linux desktop in them. You can them give all 12 thready to windows(it only uses it if it needs it). You can then have a single gt 710.

Not really. For most tasks its abrout 2-5% slower, including games if using a gpu via vt-d.

you only need one 710 anyway. I believe you can also use your iGPU for one of the instances.

nvm i'm stupid

ok if he likes to use both for whatever reason he must do it, but it (may) be not very handy. i know microsoft is spying on windows 10 users but i don't really give a f... about that (not butthurt at all) xD

running a vm with gpu passthrough can be a very challenging thing to do. I've thought many times of doing this, but i'm turned off by the thought of how complicated it all seems. unraid seems like a more user friendly solution.

If your running virt-viewer in linux you just add the gpu like you would in unraid. Its the same thing.

In this case since op is using amd, probably. for nvidia however it doesn't work as nvidia doesn't want you to do this for some reason and a workaround is required.

What do you mean nvidia doesn't want you to do this?

This is the same thing as unraid, but with a different gui.

Also Nvidia offically supports this and has guides for doing this. http://www.nvidia.com/object/dedicated-gpus.html

Why use Unraid at all? Do you need the ability to run both VMs at the same time?

It sounds like you should just dual boot Windows and Linux.

I want to run them at the same time so that my 2 auxiliary monitors can display my telegram and other apps while I'm playing games.

Do you need good GPU performance in Linux? If not, you could install Windows as the host OS and install Linux in a VM. CPU performance in your VM wouldn't be much worse (or at all) than Unraid but GPU performance would suffer.

Hi @IOU4something ,

Has the project worked and are you still interested even though This is a thing?

I want to do the same thing, but also be able to run macOS for iOS development.

If anybody want a tutorial, if I make it work, let me know.
