Hello,

I currently have an XFX DD 7950.

I would like to upgrade my card.

(All prices in Canadian  dollars) I can sell it for 140.

I can buy a GTX 770 windforce for 175,

Or I can buy a GTX 780ti evga for 300.

What should I go for, or should I completely  change what I'm getting.

Thanks.

I'm also interested as to how those cards compare to the 7950 and also the 290.

A 770 wont be much of an upgrade.  Don't bother with it.

A 780ti will be a decent upgrade though, if that price is competitive in your market.  It and the 290 will be close, but the 780ti likely performing better in most cases.

If you live in the U.S. those prices are off, but I'm assuming you do not.

Why is the 290 so strong. When it came out, I remember the 780 and 780ti kicked ass, I've read that nvidia didn't care to support the 700 cards, is that true?

Also it's 35$ from 7950 to 770, not sure if it's worth 125 to go to a 780ti.

How does the 780ti compare to an amd card or 900/10 series?

Thanks!

Neither of those is an upgrade worth making. You can sell your card now and wait for Polaris 11.

Why not?

Because they're really expensive for chips that are outdated. The 770 isn't even faster than a 7950 anymore. If you want to buy Nvidia cards, buy them when they're new. They don't age well.

Wait, how come the 770 has became worse?

Driver neglect. Your 7950 also has better dx 12 hardware.

it's not the 770 that has become worse...it's the HD7950 that has become better over time through driver updates.

Honestly dude...those GPU's...at those price...aren't really worth the upgrade...sure the 780ti is noticeably stronger...but 300$CAD....you'll be able to find GTX 980 for around that price in a month or so...

if you could get a decent chunck of change for your AMD card to pay like ''more than half'' of the 780ti it might be worth it...but AMD cards have bad re-sell value and i'd be surprised if you could get anything more than 120$ for a used HD7950.

OP if you want to compare cards quickly and kinda see in what ballpark for performance they rank...use this site, here i selected your HD7950 and a 780ti...you can change those to any cards you want these are user submitted results and fairly relieable:

The 7950 is 140 for me (already have someone interested).

The 770 is 175

780ti is 300

970 is 340

980 is like 450

290 is 240

290x is 300

380 is 220ish

Should I stay or upgrade?

Those are your intersting options...what model are we talking about (especially AMD cards AVOID reference cooler AT ALL COST)

i'd the upgrade from HD 7950 to GTX 780ti for 160$...that might be a good move IMHO.

Or HD7950 to R9 290 as well...but it depend on the model of the card (which one it is)

Forza 6, it's DX12 and Nvidia rules it. And as for the aging of cards.

I am talking about async compute. Forza 6 doesnt use it.

Also:

In case you've forgotten what a 370 is, that's a 7850; 2 performance tiers below the card of the OP. Do you want more evidence? I can keep them coming.

Doom? Where a 390 got 30fps and a 970 80? Damn dude, give it a rest. There is no one blanket statement, no one company that's best, or one card to rule them all. Games are different and drivers change. Fucking chill the fuck out.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Wow, all this time and still haven't changed your inability to actually things that are relevant to the discussion. And I'm actually quite calm. You'ree the one who is spazzing and can't even stay on topic.

  1. That game is OpenGL
  2. The performance has been fixed.
  3. What does a 970 have to do with either of the cards the OP is talking about?

You're right, we haven't gotten much better at this. You missed me saying to get the 290.

The point of contention here is the misconception that asynchronous compute is some magic bullet, and yeah it pissed me off. None of the games in my library which are built on DX12 cause me an issue. I used Doom because it isn't DX12, it shows that not all games use it. Forza 6 shows not all DX12 games use asynchronous compute. And I specifically said drivers change so why do we support our choices off benchmarks that change as quickly as our undergarments?

Fucking silly.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Games that use it

  • Hitman
  • Ashes of the Singularity
  • Quantum Break

Upcoming games:

  • MIrror's Edge Catalyst
  • Total War: Warhammer
  • Battlezone
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Battlefield 1

But I'm sure your games library of dx 12 games is a better determinant of what hardware people should buy.
