1440p at 60fps or 1080p at 120fps?

Hi guys

What is better from these two options considering that if I buy a 1440p monitor it has to be 60hz. a) Playing with 120 fps or more with 1080p resolution b) Paying with 60 fps with 1440p resolution If my monitor is only 60hz. Will the extra frames rendered using 1080p serve any good or are they redundant? Will I be better off buying a 1080p monitor with 120hz or 144hz instead of the 1440p 60hz monitor? My GPU will be either be the GTX 970 or more probably the GTX 1070.

Also I am not a performance freak and won't be playing competitevely. Just a casual gamer who wants to have some fun playing.

Thanks in advance :)

Do you play competitive games like CS:GO that could benefit from the increased frame rate?

I'd get the 1440p monitor. I think the improved display quality is better than the snappiness gained from 120 or 144hz.

No I would much rather play other games more casually; Battlefield 4 and 1 when it comes out, dark souls, the witcher etc.

far cry, gta 5 also. I'd be more focused on playing with friends for fun rather than playing competitively

Sounds like you'd enjoy 1440p better than 144Hz.

The additional framerate is great when you need to react in a snap, but usually gamers don't get to those speeds without training.

Now if you played racing games like myself, I'd recommend 144Hz either way.

Also, this is coming from someone who has never played at such a high graphics level. The previous experience I had was playing on a playstation 3 and I'm thinking of building my first pc. Sooo I don't think I'd need the 120fps. but tell me what you think anyhow

You'll notice a big difference between the 30 of PS3 and 60, not so much for 120 right now. And 1440p monitors are very spacious :)

Do link us your build so we can check it out!

okay so this was my build however I have since changed a lot of things. I've been recommended to get an i5 (hopefully you can advise me with an appropriate model), the motherboard I have to change of course... the ram I have been recommended to just get 8gb.. I'll get a 250ish gb ssd with a 1tb hard disk. And most probably I'll be getting the new GTX1070.

However all the help you can give me with regards to the above will be much appreciated :)

Of course this is all based on the assumption that the new GTX1070 will be able to run games at 60ps+

Build looks good but don't use the FX CPU. It will tank performance on multiple games especially when paired with a 390X.

The i5-6600K will do the job much better. You can still overclock it for better performance on the 212 EVO.

Also you should try to make room for an SSD. More than half the loading times while booting up / loading games compared to a hard drive. My favourite cheap SSD is the A-Data SP550.

Definitely sounds like you don't need a 120+Hz monitor for your gaming needs. My Asus PB278Q has been great for 60Hz gaming at 1440p and it looks stunning.

But getting dat frame data is always hype if you're tryna git gud

Git Gud.
