Despite Nvidia's marketing claiming its a well engineered board for overclocking its actually not, its power and thermally limited. Its a minimal card like prior reference boards its just more expensive.

Have I read wrong or is Nvidia also making a "regular" reference version that sells at $599 rather than $699?

They aren't, they are only making the founders editions for $699. The MSRP is $599 no cards have been announced at that price point yet.

Supposedly on the 27th Nvidia will be selling cards on their website. In addition you should also be able to find them at the usual retailers as well.
