Hi.
I am going to buy a keyboard soon, but I don't know if I have to go MX Black or Red. I have a laptop currently, if it helps for information.

You should really test the switches somehow before making a

decision. Go to a store, see if they have any mech keyboards

on display, buy a switch tester from ebay or cooler master,

literally anything.

That being said, the biggest difference between cherry mx

black and red is the actuation force or resistance. Basically

black is alot stiffer than the reds.

For me personally i could never use reds, i would break my

fingers from bottoming out too hard. I think blacks are nicer,

you feel alittle bit of resistance to know the key is there.

But each to his own, for some the black might have too much

resistance. Personally i feel black and red are abit boring,

since they are both linear, i would opt for clear or green

myself, but again. Each to his own, so get a switch tester.

I currently have a cherry Blue and Outemu black keyboards and from my experience, I find typing on the blacks quite hard not because there's too much resistance but I don't know when I've actuated the switch so sometimes I may think I've hit a key but didn't as  I didn't press it down far enough :P but it is a lot quieter compared to my blues...if the spacebar didn't exists, it would almost be silent...(the stabliser metal bar always makes a metal twang noise when ever I hit the space bar).

Blacks are a lot better helping yo from bottoming out the keys but it may be too stiff for some (that's what she said xD) while some may find reds too light and constantly bottom them out with still a lot of force left. It's all down to what you prefer and we can't make a judgement for you :P The best way to find out your favourite switch is to either get a key switch tester or go to a local store and if they have mechanical keyboards on display, check them out.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

I think for versatility MX Browns and Blues are the best for that.

Though as @tobben said, if there's a way that you could find a store that carried a good variety of the MX switches to test them out yourself then do that to find a switch you'll like.

I'm pretty sure I like MX Browns, so I'll vouch for those.

The reason I say that is because I had tried MX Reds but I didn't like them and I had tried the Romer G switch and whatever switch is used on the Razer Blackwidow Chroma (I think they might be Razer Greens) and I liked the Romer Gs and Razer Greens over the MX Red and I was interested in MX Blues but I didn't want the click. So I had figured (and also in part suggested) to go with MX Browns. I have yet to order a keyboard since I need to buy the parts to build my PC first but otherwise yeah MX Browns seem to be the way to go if you want something that'll be good for regular typing or for gaming or for pretty much anything in between.

as mentioned above, test out a switch (or an entire keyboard) before buying it, preferably

as linear switch may not fit your taste at all depending on what you do

i've been using MX blues for typing and gaming because i liked the clicky sound and tactile bumps

and my opinion of mx blues is that they're excellent for typing, not so much for gaming as the tactile bump sometimes cause my finger to not register a double tap easily

i suspect the MX browns have better balance between tactile bump and linearity (it doesnt bump as hard and returns fast)

i never got the reds because i cant feel the actuation point, which i wont know if i actuated the key or not

and the blacks is because they're too stiff, as well as both for not having a satisfying click most importantly :D

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I kinda like to think of the MX Browns as probably the MX Blues with out the click. Some like to think of MX browns as MX Reds with a tacticle bump.

Either of which are true.

I didn't like MX Reds because the only way I could be sure if I actuated the switch would be to bottom the keys out, which I already do and would probably continue to do but at least with the tactile bump as I hit the bottoming out point at least I felt that I had actuated the key. Which is why I don't mind Membrane and Scissor Switch keyboards is because they kind of have a tactile feel when you get the membrane dome down far enough for it to register or for the same thing to happen on a scissor switch laptop keyboard.
