Learning Javascript

Not sure if this is the right place for this, I'm assuming it is since this section is called Programming.

 

For a good while now I've wanted to learn computer coding, and was told Javascript was a good one to start with.

 

I was hoping someone could give me advice on the best way to learn it, and if there's any resources available online to learn from?

 

I do understand the way coding works to some degree, I run Ubuntu on my laptop and picked up a little on the coding in it (I know it doesn't run Javascript) but I want something "easy" to start from. I do think I could learn it if I applied myself to it, I was able to get a good grasp on foreign languages like German from only a week or so of practicing that. Because of that I do think if I applied myself to learning computer code I could figure it out.

well, you dont really "learn to code" but rather "code to learn".

you just pick something you want to achieve, pick a language it'd be possible in, and trial and error.

 

the way i picked up python was by fishing a python based IRC chatbot off the interwebz and figure out its workings to make it do what i wanted it to do.

Ultimately the best way to learn would be specific to you. I personally prefer getting a book from a well respected author but others prefer video tutorials. Google Javascript tutorials and find a learning medium that works for you.

i think the most effective approach would be something that makes you learn by doing it. that's how I learned some foreign languages

Every programming tutorial you use has the requisite that you do coding with each tutorial regardless of delivery method. Its more of a question of do you learn by audio/visual or books.

Hey! have you tried Code Academy? It teaches basic stuff by letting you code things, while giving you examples, e.t.c.

I started at Lynda.com and still am a sub with trying to get each day like an hour to watch it,

most of the people dont use Lynda since you have to pay for it but some people do not mind to pay for the quality you get there.

Completed like 6 courses that has to do with Web development, and i really like it.

 

What i'll do is just get as much information as possible, then work on my own project and see what i can apply that i've learned.

So i am not coding active while watching the video or do the practices you get with it.

I'll just watch and try to add as much as possible to my own projects.

 

I havent started JS yet i really want to but im still trying to finish Regular expressions even i understand what i do need to understand, also about to finish up Web security.

After that perhaps ill go for JS or an other course for PHP OOP.

 

So ill suggest Lynda.com

Problem with that is I'm too strapped for cash atm to throw it into something like that

it's actucally a very good wesbite I finished my javasctipt up the other day. later lessions go into classes, methord and functions. Very OOP.

You might check out the coding bundles on TweakTown deals. I've bought quite a few of them but never use them...Yeah, I realized that I'm a book person. I got tired of having to watch video of some guy talking or a tutorial video playing (like code academy) because I just wanted to code, and code fast. I read books far faster than watching someone code. However, there are times where I use YouTube to reinforce the coding.

 

As stated above, you really need to code to learn. I learned that the hard way this semester in my Object Oriented class...I did the homework, but failed on the exam. What matters more is knowing how to use the concept for yourself (If you really want to learn, try to apply your code with problems you make), and not just the homework. I'm now spending the summer redoing all of the design patterns and restudying OO concepts and pushing myself to apply them to problems. As a result, some of the graduating students at my college have really high GPAs but have no idea how to code outside from the homework.

 

The other major hurdle is focusing on the foundations. It's very tempting to get depressed when you see your peers or people on the internet making some super awesome programming project but here you are just writing basic small tiny programs. You just have to keep at coding every day (Yes, every day)...this applies to any skill though.

You shouldn't be so quick to draw such a comparison. Simply learning one programming language in a purely academic setting will get you around 2% of the way there. Have a look at some of the theory that backs Software Development.

agree with this i'm just at the end of my computer science degree and i've learnt magnitudes more on my own then in education.
