144hz vs 1440p

Go to solution Solved by Clonzoo,

I have a monitor very similar to that one, maybe 1 year older. They are a complete pain in the ass to get the color and lighting right. But once you get that nailed it a good monitor imo. Heigh Adjust/Pivot is a must for me after using it for about 1.5 - 2 years (?) Good monitor from what I can tell. I like mine and its probably just a previous version of that one.

I currently have a  asus vs239h-p. ips 1080p 60hz 5ms. needles to say its pretty bad. I am wanting to upgrade for around 250 and 350$. I play fairly demanding games (battlefield 1 hype!). I have a i5 4690k and a 390 nitro. Do you think games like that would benefit more from 144hz or 1440p. If so what monitor for around my price range would you recommend. I have one 144hz monitor in mind. (AOC G2460PF) I mainly like this one because of the freesync. Would this be a good choice? Or do you think I should go with a different 144hz monitor or a 1440p monitor. Thanks! :D

With FPS games go for a 144hz. I noticed a difference in CS:GO. But be aware, your gpu need to dish out 144fps in games or its kinda pointless. Anything else go with the 1440p. Atleast thats my opinion. But it all depends on you, what other games do you play?

I once explained to my girlfriend what true love is. I said, "If you were a shit, I'd put you back in" and to this day, she is still my little shit.

1) make sure your gpu can pump out 144fps or above to begin with

2) maybe free-sync

3) grab a monitor with low INPUT LATENCY, response time is not as important as input latency imo

an r9 390 probably wont push 144hz on 1440p with decent settings on AAA games like BF, i could be wrong though

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

i prefer 1440p over 144hz, i prefer eye candy and real estate over the high frame rates

Why not have both?? throw in some G-SYNC for good measure, maybe IPS as well.

All i can say is from own experience, i went from a 1920x1080 27" 60hz TN 2ms to a 2560x1440 27" 144hz IPS 5ms, and the difference was big and now i hate to look at any of my old screens..

And remember that not all freesync monitors can go more than 90fps with freesync on.

Spoiler

so if your rig can spit out more than 140 frames per second in 1920x1080, then go for a 144hz display.

if your rig can't spit out more than 140 frames per second in 1920x1080, then go for a 2560x1440 display.

Why should he go with G-sync for nvidia when he has a 390?

he will get no benefit from it, and he might be locked to 120hz instead of 144hz because of the g-sync.

So if I run freesync on the AOC G2460PF, I will be locked somewhere around 120 hz?

In theory, but you really should check if the games you intend to play benefit from or even allow such high framerates. PC Gaming Wiki usually lists the framerate caps for each game.

Ultra-competitive, lower-fidelity FPS games like CS:GO are probably the best reasons to get a 144 Hz monitor.

Call of Duty games have various framerate caps depending on which game it is. Advanced Warfare was capped at 91 FPS in multiplayer, but Black Ops 3 could run at up to 240 FPS.

Battlefield 4 has a very high framerate cap, but it's not likely your system would maintain 144 FPS without some significant quality sacrifices.

same here...my monitor can do both, if i had to choose i would pick the resolution as a keeper any day of the week...get 1440p 60hz monitor and try to overclock it with a custom resolution to 65 or 70hz and call it a day!

It really depends on the monitor, like i said, not all freesync monitors can go more than 90fps with freesync on.

Many on the freesync monitors will cap at the 90fps and go no further, but with freesync off you will be able to go full 144hz (if the display is a 144hz one)

Take my 27" 2560x1440 IPS 144hz 5ms is of cause a 144hz display, but if i run it with freesync it will be capped at 90hz~90fps.
