Hi guys, this is my first time posting on the forums and i hope that you will be able to help me :)

so i have been an AMD user until now, i am going to change my system up due to some money coming my way and well just because i want to :)

my current system is as follows

  • CPU - AMD Phenom x6 1090t black edition
  • CPU cooler - Antec kuhler Flow cooler
  • RAM - G.skill 8GB
  • SSD - 240GB Corsair force
  • GPU - Gainward NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
  • Artic blue 850W psu

thats my current sytem give or take a few items i.e harddrive etc. ive built it over the course of time and is sort of my first build for my self that i game on

recently i decided that i wanted to upgrade and its been a while since i last looked for parts etc and my brain started to ache haha, after about 2 weeks of scouring and searching i think that i have a basic build for myself

here are the parts that i have come up with so far

  • Intel Core i5 4670k
  • MSI Z87-G45-gaming
  • Corsair Vengeance pro series 8GB
  • Corsair H100i
  • either the carbide 500r or nzxt phantom of some description still unsure
  • as for GPU im waiting until after AMD gpu unveil on 25th and then go from there but i am open to suggestions as long as its not ridiculous

what i would like to know from you knowledgeable bunch is, is this going to be a good system for me? i will be mainly gaming with some basic office work.

i play a variety of games such as BF3, LoL, ARMA 2 - 3, SimCity etc you get the picture i ideally would like to not spend more than about £220 on the gpu but if its worth the extra i may be able to stretch a little bit.

so again,

1. is this a good first intel build for myself

2. what would you change and why

you should also know aswell that i will not be overclocking straight away but i am contemplating having a dabble with it when i feel more comfortable hence the k series intel, ive also chosen haswell because i would ideally like to keep the system for about 2 years or more.

thanks for any response and please be gentle im new to the intel scene.

damn read his post. :D UK, gaming

@ArchAngel

What G.Skill Ram do you have? 8 GB of it looks good. You should keep that. The SSD is ofc worth keeping. Your PSU is absolute overkill, but now that you've already got it, keep it. Your GPU deserves an upgrade, as you stated, maybe 560 Ti SLI if you already got a 850W PSU. :D Or ofc wait for new AMD.

The H100I for cooling is also overkill for an i5 4670K but it is definitley helpfull for extreme overclocks. Something like a bequiet! Dark Rock 2 should suffice.

who cares...

calm your mouth there. he said 220 for a gpu not for the whole system. you should read his damn post.

i believe if im not mistaken they are these 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws-X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL 1600MHX DDR3

i thought the h100i was going to be overkill but i figured that if i was going to try and keep it quiet when it needs to be then that would be a good option and not only that but when i do decide to overclock then i wont have to go out and buy a new cooler

The h100i has loud stock fans and you'd be replacing them anyway. I'd get a cheaper cooler and some good aftermarket fans.

What kind of color theme are you going for?

I'd recommend waiting for the new AMD cards to come out and some benchmarks to be made first though. Parts and prices will probably change quite a bit by then.

i read that it had loud stock fans and i plan on buying some other quieter fans to use with it but that remains to be seen at the moment and the motherboard is black and red so i will be using that as my theme i believe

things are still on the drawing board at the moment so i could change providing its not stupid extreme price difference :)

Your RAM is fine, it even matches your color scheme. Save some money there and keep them.

Air cooling should be enough to OC a 4670K and operate silently. A bequiet! Dark Rock 2 (pro) should be your best bet for looks + silent + cool, fans don't even need to be replaced (silent wings 2). Be carefull with high profile RAM though, my Dark Rock 2 only fits in pull because of my Corsair Vengeance Pro mem.

The H100i + silent fans is still a valid option but i thought the air alternative is also appealing.

who cares...

the budget i would say all in all is roughly £900 but that has to include a new monitor and keyboard, i live in the UK and mainly gaming to be honest

This is my suggestion for your build including monitor & keyboard

I'd recommend some red CM Sickleflows. They're very quiet.

Are you looking to have an SSD? I know the Samsung ones are pretty good, theirs also Intel and Corsair who make good SSDs. I would just go off of price. If it doesn't fit in the budget no big deal but I highly recommend it.

Specs: | NZXT Phantom 410 | AMD FX 8350 | Cooler Master 212 Hyper EVO | ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 | EVGA GTX 670 FTW+ SLI | Corsair Vengeance 16GB | Seagate 2TB & 1TB 7200RPM | Corsair Neutron 240GB | Corsair HX850 | Windows 7 64-Bit | Peripherals: Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2012 | Razer Deathadder 2012 | Dell 17" & ASUS 21.5" x2 Monitors | Blue Snowball | Audiotechnica M30X |
