Ext HDD disconects when playing videos.

LLOYD-AF

Hello people.

So my external HDD disconnetcs then immediatley reconnects anywhere between 5 minutes and 1 hour when playing videos using Vlc. I have used various usb ports and tested it with my pc and laptop. Used different wall sockets too, Any ideas?

Both pc and laptop using windows 10 and HDD was formatted using windows 8.1.

Thank you.

Seems like a power related issue. Mine do that as well when I have them hooked up to an unpowered usb hub.

It happens because most hard drives/ ssds require more power than usb can deliver, so they will run out of power and disconnect momentarily when under load (such as reading files off it)

Is your hdd powered?

Yeah its powered but now that i think about it im not using the original power adaptor as it was lost when moving house and thats when it started having problems. How should i check what adaptor it needs?

Yeah. Check the voltages and amps required, because having an under powered adapter could be causing the issues.

So I just checked and my HDD needs 100-240V / 12V / 1.5A, and thats what I'm using. Any other ideas? it only happens when playing videos, I can leave it turned on all day and transfer files etc with no issues.

Does it disconnect when running a benchmark like atto?

Tests speeds, so it will put a greater load on the hdd than playing videos. If it disconnects then, it is likely power related.

Below are the results, HDD did not disconnect, So could be an issue with VLC, however I have no issues with other HDD+VLC.

Thats quite odd. power issues are out of the question if it was able to run a benchmark without disconnecting.

Does it happen in any other video playback program?

It says caution for the health. Try running crystal diskinfo to see what is showing up as an issue. It shouldn't be something to worry about unless it gets bad, as I have some pending relocated sectors on on of my external hdd but it still works as intended.

@LLOYD-AF

You have quite a few uncorrectable sectors (48 in hex = 72 failed sectors). See if the number increases over time. The drive is starting to fail. I think maybe it's failing over a particular section of the drive. I would also take a listen to the drive to see if you hear any loud clicks or skipping. My 8 year old WD black started to die and it would get roughly 4-10 uncorrectable sectors per few hours (It also made a clicking noise).

Ill keep an eye on it. No clicking noise yet. Ive not used the drive that much so im pretty annoyed its already failing.

Edit : is this the part I should be tracking ?

Yep. Since you said your drive was fairly new, it might just have started to get these issues when the disconnecting started. Bit unusual that it would have these issues for being so young, but either way keep an eye on it from time to time to see if it goes up.

In my case one of my external drives had a few pending relocated sectors and it would only show up when I was trying to copy files off the drive, and the transfer cam across that certain sector.

Yep, you want to look at those two.

Yeah, that sucks. I usually run a drive test on every drive I buy to make sure it's not DOA...or has a bad sector. From the sounds of it, I think your drive has a certain part of it that is bad, so when the drive tries to go over it, it crashes. I'm guessing it survived Crystal Disk because it didn't use that specific part of the drive that's damaged.

But yeah, I would keep a eyes on it. What model is the drive? I would also advise backing up the stuff from the drive...I would not run the risk with any important data.

In the future I will run tests and return it if needed. Link for the drive below

Yeah, I wonder what would happen if you ran the tests now though (Of course get your data off of the drive first).

For Seagate, you need Seatools. Run the Long Generic test:
