Dilemma - eGPU vs Desktop

Hi all,

So I am having this dilemma and I’m not sure what to do.

I currently own the hardware as described below. These devices are great for my work as Visual designer. It surprised me that a surprisingly large amount of games can be played on the 3440x1440 resolution using this laptop. Unfortunately a game like Battlefield 4 is  basically unplayable with this configuration. What do you think I should do to make games such as BF4 playable at 3440x1440 or at least 2560x1080?

  • Laptop - MSI Ghost Pro GS60 4k
    • Thunderbolt 3
    •  GTX
  •  Monitor - Dell U3415w
    • 21:9
    • 3440x1440

I am thinking of three solutions:

  • eGPU custom build
    • What configuration?
    • Can I simply copy a setup like Razer Core
    • Is there a well documented guide on how to do this?
    • How much does this cost?
    • Is it guaranteed that this will work?
  • eGPU like Razer Core
  • Desktop PC

What do you think I should do? Has any of you succesfully built a well working eGPU?

Thanks in advance!

eGPU is clunky and expensive

Too much trouble, just build a desktop, if you're in the US it's about 700 for an i5 6500 + 390

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I'd say downscale to 1080p and play on that maybe?

Would have to downscale to 21:9 720p for the best scaling

Thanks for all the replies so far!

So basically, an eGPU is not worth it.

@Streetguru Haha, yeah, it's awesome. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and I am really enjoying the monitor. Even looking for new wallpapers is satisfying

Well, downscaling hasn't been very succesful actually when playing Battlefield 4. The performance is definitely not the same as on 1080p on my laptop. All my settings are set to high when playing without the monitor. With the monitor attached, i can barely play at low settings. I guess it's because the following. I can change the resolution in two ways:

  • In game
    • 16:9 on 1920x1080, it stretches the screen to fit the height of my monitor. Since it's 16:9, I will have black bars on both sides. I don't mind the black bars though.
  • Monitor
    • 16:9 on 1920x1080 without stretching. I see no point in playing like this since it's the same experience as on my laptop, haha.

It affects performance when the resolution is changed in game. The graphics are uglier when playing this way, but I honestly don't mind it that much.

Gotta run it at 1720x720p which probably isn't officially supported in like any games
