Hello there

I salvaged 2 Kingston SSD's from some old Microsoft computers (original thread https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/586674-microsoft-and-ex-computers/ ), and I need some advice.

The two drives are a KC300 240GB and a V200 256GB.

Questions:

Which is better (read/write speeds, ect...)?

Which should I install OS on?

Should I run a RAID? (I also have 2x WD 500GB SATA 2 drives that I could use for backup for a raid array)

Thanks

Callum

OS on the KC (its faster)

and games or what not on the V200 (its older)

rule of thumb if you ask "Should I run a RAID?"

You don't know enough in general or a prepared enough to take the risks ect.

If the KC is faster, than why not put everything on it and use the V200 when the KC fills up?

put all your SSDs and HDDs in RAID 0 together

/jk plz don't actually do that xD

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

1) KC300 is much better

2) the KC300

3) the only thing you should be raiding is the fridge if you have to ask

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

What should I do with the V200. It is technically Microsoft property, and would be illegal to sell, so I may aswell use it,

Hey :)

My take on this: Depending on what you will be doing with the computer, I doubt that you will notice a significant difference between the speeds of the two SSDs. Everyday usage won't suffer from a slightly lower performance and gaming relies on the storage's performance only for the loading times (FPS and graphics aren't affected) so you would most likely see a few seconds improvement on the heavier games. I'd suggest to rather check the health and the wear of the SSDs and use the healthier one for the OS and the more important data and the other for things you can afford to lose or have backups of.

I wouldn't use RAID unless it's really necessary for your work and if you have actual continuous backups. RAID0 generally offers quite good performance gain but there's a big catch - it's mainly on the sequential speeds and not all types of applications benefit from it. There's also some amount of overhead involved as well as the increased risk of data loss. :) I would usually advise against RAID0 unless it's necessary and even if it is I would say a very often backup is essential for your data's safety.

Just my two cents :)
