I haven't played a Helix, but if youtube is anything to go by, they sound pretty great! The AxeFx II mark II and XL+ were released in 2014, and while it is 2 years ago, the software updates and support are unlike anything I've ever seen. As far as I'm aware, they're still releasing new software for the Ultra which is from 2008! In that way, I don't this its age makes it remotely less relevant. I'm sure you'd have a great time with a Helix! There's also the Fractal AX8 to consider as well.

Oh right, bit dumb of me not to think of software updates.... frikken derp.
Interesting, very interesting.

It's an amp and effects modeller. So basically every tone I could ever need! It's great for someone like me who doesn't really play live, but records a lot and hasn't really found what 'their sound' is. I can also use it as studio outboard gear for processing other signals from synths or anything from a DAW through. It's incredibly expensive, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you know exactly what it does and if you 'need' one :P

oh right neat, i thimk i would rather spend that money on a gibson. Have you ever used the ibanez ts9 pedal? if so are they worth buying?

Of course! If you don't have a great guitar that you love to play, what's the point? :P

I have not tried a TS9 before, but as far as overdrives go, it's definitely one of the most popular

I've only been playing for 2 years, and I have too many guitars for my skill to warrant, but whatever. I love me geetars, especially the 7 string guitars, very comfy.

Fun stuff. not an ibanez fanboi at all.

My favorite one is my blue RG7421PB.

I've been playing for something like 10-12 years, but only wanted to take it seriously for the past couple. I've had exams and health problems holding me back for ages, but hopefully I'll be able to attack with gusto this summer!

Here's my pride and joy:

Suhr Modern Satin with a bareknuckle juggernaut in the bridge. Got some more wiring stuff to do this summer to change the switching. Tis a thing of beauty.

Here's m'AxeFxII. Glorious

Yes indeed, that guitar is a thing of beauty. The pickup cover on the juggernaut looks awesome. definitely some expensive gear you got there.

nice guitars mate, im not sure if i like ibanez guitars, the more i see them the more i like them, but to me the best looking guitar is either a vintage sunburst les paul, or a es-355 in cherry red with a bigsby! i do like blue one tho, How do you go about playing a seven string is it much different to a 6? have you ever played a 12 string, im considering buying one?

I'm not a big fan of the les paul shape, too chunky and weird for me, super strats feel perfect. Playing a 7 string is about the same as a 6, just with another string on the top. Its nice if for some reason you want to reach a little below a regular 6 string's range. There are plenty of bands/artists out there now that use them, one of my favorite is Widek.

My cousin got a 12 string not too long ago and it takes some getting used to, more than a 7 string that's for sure. You'll need quite a bit more finger strength to do barre chords.

oh right, so your chords mainly stay the same formation, neat. i have only been playing since the start of this year, and im just beginning to learn barre chords. Did you cousin play an acoustic 6 string, or electric?

@Tr3vor

Is that acoustic an s6?  They are lovely, bought my sister one so I could have a guitar at her place.  Can't wait to hear it in 20  years.

Old guitars are the best guitars, friends.

I collect old made in Japan Yamahas.  My next guitar will be an L-10.  I had the chance to buy one sub $1000 a few years ago and didn't jump on it and now I can't spend that kind of money.

This one is an L-5.  It's an angel.

Also I'm a shredder.  I would recommend anyone get a 12 string or get a beefy guitar and put medium strings on it, it will make you a better player.  When you pick up a guitar with light strings it will feel like a toy.

To me, looks on the guitar is a far second behind sound.  You can have a great sounding guitar or a pretty guitar, but you have to pay a lot of money for one that's both.

Yeah, I cant believe that this looks the way it does for $500. they must have got a shit ton of burled poplar for cheap or something.

Well on the top 6 strings, like a regular guitar are the same, if you want to throw in the low B (or A, whatever you want to tune it to), you'll have to figure out something different. He has both an acoustic and an electric 6 string.

Yeah, its an s6. I only got it recently to try out an acoustic guitar since I've only had electrics up till this point. The local music store had its 40th anniversary, every guitar in the store was 40% off, was a steal for ~$300 new.

That's a great deal. They are already an exceptional value.  It's because seagull has gone against the grain of using the typically famous sound woods and used all north american woods for their guitars.

The irony is that the "best" sound woods change as the years go by, and they change because the woods become short in supply as we tear down rainforest around the world.

I see where you're coming from, but I disagree. If you're learning and your guitar doesn't inspire you to pick it up off the stand, it doesn't matter how good it sounds. It's only a narrow thing, mind. To me, the most inspiring thing is playing your favourite songs and sounding as good as or better than the original. A bad sounding guitar can never deliver such pleasures :P

Yeah it is, but I don't really care about that too much. I don't think that any ibanez RGs with fancy tops aren't veneer, unless you're going prestige or arched top or something.

That's more of an acoustic thing than anything though, wood on electrics for the most part do not matter, unless you have the ears of a god or don't like high gain. For electrics with me its how it plays, if the neck doesn't agree with your hands, you won't have a good time.

That's not entirely true though.  A good electric guitar will still have good acoustics.  My epiphone les paul pro isn't an expensive guitar but it has solid acoustics.  Meaning it doesn't need to be plugged in and it will still make nice sounds.

Cheap electric guitars are entirely acoustically dead.  Of course they are going to have shitty pickups too.

I understand what you're saying for sure.  Especially about neck comfort.

It's like anything else, you can't have everything unless you pay for it.

I understand what you're saying for sure.  Especially about neck comfort, but a good guitarist will be able to play any guitar after a bit of settling in.  That's another good reason to have multiple guitars and to switch between them regularly, it makes you a better player.

Well you don't buy an electric to play it acoustically. The reason solidbody electric guitars are solid is so they don't vibrate and feedback from the loud amps sitting next to you.

Even if the pickups are bad, the amp makes up most of the tone. You can plug in any cheapo guitar into an axe fx (given that you know what you're doing with the thing) and make it sound good, but if you plug in a custom PRS or something like that into a 5w solid state combo with an 8" speaker, its going to sound like shit.

That's somewhat surprising to me, but I Will be honest with you that I don't play much electrically.  I have been playing for 10 years but almost entirely on acoustics.  I actually have a behringer acoustic amp.  I plan to get into electric music more, because I'm very skilled and could have a lot of fun with it.  But I still need to get a hold of some more gear.

Next time you're at a guitar store give a Jazzmaster or Jaguar a go. The offset body shape is probably my favorite ever. It just feels right. It takes a bit to get used to how the bridges on JM's and Jags work, but now that I've gotten the hang of it they're a breeze.

OHH A GUITAR THREAD!!! Okay well recently I've been considering playing again, no writing as that's not a gift I posses BUT I like to learn songs from bands I like (who doesn't? dumb thing to mention right?) I was given a POS epiphone SG about 8 years ago which was an "upgrade" from my Fender Squire, shut up I got it in 4th grade.

So I don't want to spend more than $500 and I really would like to keep it under $400. I like ESP, Ibanez, Epiphone, and some more I can't think of ATM.. I mostly play metal core and post hardcore crap. CHUG CHUG CHUG. Anyways suggestions are welcome.

System: i7 4790K, Hyper 212 EVO, 16 GB Crucial Ballistix, GTX 1070 Super clocked, MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition, Corsair RM 750, Corsair 750D (with 2 additional 140mm NZXT fans up top for exhaust.)

For that style, the look is important, I'd say go for a B.C. Rich beast or Warlock guitar. Personally I own a Jackson with a gibson explorer shape body that I use on stage for any thrash or hard metal type stuff, if I can help it I use my Ibanez Gio or play bass though. (the Gio just looks too weak to play thrash)

My jackson and B.C. Rich bass in the pics, excuse the terrible quality, all I could find was my old actioncam to take a pic of the Jackson with
