Upgrade an old Laptop or getting a new one

I had a F80L series (Intel Core 2 Duo T5750, 2GB Ram and 160 HDD) laptop, been using it for around 7 years by now.

I am stuck between upgrading it or replacing it.

 

I am inclining to get a MSI GL62 6QD or a MSI CX62 6QD  (Both Malaysia version,I am a Malaysian)

 

Here's why I wish to:

 

a)Upgrade the one I had now

1)I am not a heavy user(only use my laptop to do basic student/teenager stuffs)

2)Thinking of saving money, upgrading the ram to 4GB and replacing a larger HDD(1 or 2TB preferably) or SSD is always cheaper than a new laptop

3)Console lover,seldom play games on pc or laptops (only emulator visualboy,etc)

 

b)Get a new one

1)College year is coming,thinking of taking Interactive Software Design

2)Minor problems with my old babe,blacks out without reason,had to force restart her.

3)Expansion was limited(ram wise),wish to get a decent laptop with further expansions.

 

If i really had to get a new one, are the two laptop decent enough to cover light gaming,movies,browsing and college assignments????

Any advice or recommendations?????

Just like my turd of an alienware 17 2013 model. it's one of the best laptops i've ever had, i mean. All the led lights are broken, i never used them anyway, it's fairly light, it's survived me tripping on the stairs. i mean. it's not a laptop i'd reccomend at all, i'm just emotionally attatched to it.

I would upgrade to an SSD more RAM, and reinstall your OS. I did this and here is why, Right now a SSD is a good PC/ Laptop investment period, it will make everything faster on your computer. You can also use your current HDD as an external drive and have more storage. Also If you upgrade later the SSD can go with you. RAM is pretty cheap and easy to upgrade. A fresh install makes a huge difference. Get an anti-virus program also!
