I almost bought a HTC Vive today...

ApexTypeA

It's like someone showed up after 3 years of built-up anticipation and stole Oculus Rift's cake. From right under their noses. Everybody is talking about the Vive. Heck; my wife asked me how much it was after I showed her a demo video. That's is  as much permission to burn 900 bucks as I'm ever likely to get! :-)

It seems as though Oculus will release a motion controller later this year. Prices will probably be comparable. The videos I saw seem to show the Vive games to be simpler, more sandbox like than the Oculus. The Vive's games are not as deep but physical interaction is superb. 2 months ago I didn't even think I was going to get one of these for at least a couple of years. Today I was eye measuring my computer room.

The logical thing to do is to get Iteration 2 of either device, whichever is successful. What do you folks think?

Haha. Permission.

I think that waiting would be a good call, but who knows how long it'll be until they release V2. I wonder if it'll be a yearly update, or if it'll go 5 years like a console.

Based on oculus' dev kits, it isn't common for updates.

My current build - Ever Changing.

Number 1 On LTT LGA 1150 CPU Cinebench R15

Personally... I would wait at least till V2 of either one of them. As for choosing between the 2, Vive seem to be better since it have that full room tracking, while still able to do everything the Oculus can. However Oculus right now have the edge on games since they are the one throwing money at devs to produce games for their device. So... TLDR: wait for the next generation.

In the mean time how about going with a GearVR if you happen to have a Note 5 or S6/7? Even a Note 4 can work with the Consumer version Gear VR too if you willing to cut and modified it a bit (I can say that as a fact since that's exactly what I'm doing right no, using Note 4 with GearVR CV1). It offer quite an amount of free games and "experience" for only 99$ (assuming you already own a High end Samsung phone), and if you willing to spend some more money on the games there's a few noteworthy games as well. The performance is no where as close as a Rift or Vive, but still pretty decent, and some games/demo is really really enjoyable too

All the Rift exclusive games can be played on Vive. Thus meaning there is yet another reason why the Vive just simply is the superior headset right now.

I have to say, based on what I saw so far, that I agree. Unbelievable that the people at Oculus did not see this coming. The perfect is the enemy of the good. They could have done it quicker, they could have captured the market. They had captivated everybody with the promise. They they let it slip just like that. If I was an investor I would be so very pissed right now. The kind of PR the Vive is getting cannot simply be undone. They missed the boat on that one and I don't know if they will ever be able to catch up with it.

That was my thoughts aswell. They had Plenty of time to make it possible to move around in a decently big area, just like the Vive.. HTC just blew right by them, with a better package and they have even managed to get it shipped earlier without much struggle and with motion controllers.

The way I see it, is that the two headsets are pretty much the same. But with Vive you're also able to move around in a bigger area. It does cost a bit more, but atleast you get the motion controllers, which is something you pretty much have to have.
