With a benchmark your system (or CPU, or GPU alone) will be stressed and it will see how well it can perform. How well it can perform is often said in either an fps amount or score, so you know how your parts stack up to other systems.

Popular GPU benchmarks include 3DMark FireStrike and Unigene's Heaven and Valley benchmark.

As for CPU, Cinebench is the most popular.

Some games have benchmarks included as well, like Tomb Raider 2013, Metro Last Light and Bioshock Infinite

A benchmark is a baseline score of how well your computer performs when put to a task. for example there are benchmarks that test your GPU, CPU.
