And no mc doesn't like the igpu. It's much better then it was 2 years ago but anything dedicated helps a lot.

My niece plays on an ancient i5 ... 650 (I think).  MC gets 28-33 FPS on the iGPU.  That's a 5+ year old dual core with a horrible iGPU.

particle packs

add on packs

high res packs

reskins

texture packs

Let me put it this way, not all packs are created equal.  Some are easier to run than others.

Modpacks like Technic's Voltz, or FTB's Tekkit Series are relatively light but massively change the way Minecraft is played.  The only facts we have to go on are that he wants to run a pack involving around 40 mods.  That sounds light.  It might be a custom pack or an official one.  We don't know.

Packs are not all about shaders and retexturing.  Good packs change the entire mechanics of the game.  Feel like a tech pack?  Maybe explore the moon with Glacticraft?  Maybe you want to dabble in the mystical arts and fancy a run at the Witchery mod, or Ars Magica 2.

My point is that guessing what mods he is using is pointless.  There are so many good ones that do not overly stress a PC.
