I dont get Raid 0

People keep throwing out 

OMG DONT DO RAID 0 IF 1 DRIVE FAILS YOURE FU...

 

thats excatly what whould happpen i just put one drive. and it fails...

 

is there other concerns that raid 0 gets , other that the one i just mentioned?

No, that's really the only concern, but realize if you have two drives in RAID 0 the likelihood of one of them failing is twice as high as the likelihood of a single drive failing if you just have a single drive. 

 

(There are also other concerns....like the RAID card/controller failing or a SATA port going bad -- i.e. RAID 0 just adds another level of complication)

lets see

if one drive have a 50% chance of surviving by the end of the test

having two drive side by side with the same data would have a 75% chance of you still having your data by the end of the test

having one drive work independently will have 50% chance

having both drive strapped together will have 25% chance

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

And the fact that the raid system can itself fail, even if each drive is OK by itself.  This can happen for a number of reasons, including sudden power loss, so it's actually more likely to fail than 2x the likelihood of 1 drive failure :)

Of course no one should be using RAID 0 on a mass storage situation, and regardless any data you don't want to lose should be backed up, so it's not like the lower reliability should be a considered a reason to not use it for boot or something like that, but it is good to be aware that it would leave you with a greater risk of having to reinstall everything if something goes wrong.

99% of the time raid does not fail because a drive dies

 

it fails because software raid is crap, especially on consumer motherboards, and the raid array just stops working for random reasons

 

one example is a power outage or brownout

if your PC does not shut down properly, your raid array goes to hell and you lose everything

 

also sometimes your array just gets corrupted for no reason and you need to format and clean install everything

 

So unless someone enjoys losing all their stuff and clean installing repeatedly, software raid is dumb

also most of the time people dont need anywhere near 1000MBps speeds, so its just a waste for decreased reliability

I have four SSDs in Raid 0, I have taken the following precautions:

- Ensure SSDs have power loss protection.

- Ensure PC is connect to a UPS.

- Ensure you are actually running sata in RAID MODE. (never build a raid then switch back to AHCI)

- Using Updated RST drivers and software.

- Using 4 new identical good quality sata cables.

- Making a bootable Clone of the volume every few weeks to a Hard disk.

 

1.5 years and still running perfectly :)

 

(Also take a photo of the EXACT RAID config, stripe size and drive order. I've had a friend recover a raid by simple rebuilding it.)

Intel RST used in countless systems is software RAID so by your definition Intel RAID is crap.

yeah, you wouldnt believe how many times a month people come to this forum asking for help because their raided PC doesnt boot

 

if you want to do raid, buy a proper raid card

 

but the best option is to not do raid

hmm,if its not major wouldnt it be less complicated lol.

RAID 0 is often slower for booting than a single drive, as the RAID controller and array both need to be initialised before the operating system can be loaded. 

 

Also, RAID can put extra load on the drives, which increases the chances of them failing even more.
