I bought a samsung 850 evo SSD and have been cloning my C drive to the SSD (which has my OS on it) it took about 30 min to get to 99% and everything was going great, but now it has been on 99% for 30 min and it says it is "Verifying cloned Windows partition..." it also opened a notepad++ window that has this written in it:

"bcdedit /store E:\boot\bcd /enum {default} > F:\bcdret.inf"

HELP MEEEEE WHATS HAPPENING????

this is why you dont cones

do a clean install the proper way

avoid these issues in the first place

if its stuck, theres nothing you can do about it except start over, in which case it may do the same thing again

seriously, just dont be lazy and do a clean install

its not hard

ofc you will, do a backup off the important stuff and then do a clean install, cloning has problems

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I don't think its laziness most of the time.. people believe that cloning a drive has no side effects.

Do a clean install on the SSD, install programs from their respective websites

Transfer files to the SSD from the original drive.

Wipe the original drive to use as storage

well it should take it awhile at 98-100 since it most likely goes back to check the data it just wrote, until an error occurs or it stops responding don't panic.

The note pad app seems like you may have changed the default program to open that file type at somepoint. I'm guessings its just a bat or cmd (you can look at the doc name/properties to tell). This may be harmless but may be an important process to the cloning. close it and change the default program for bats, cmds, etc back to the right program and not notepad.

If the clone worked, woo, if not after you fix the program defaults issue try again

no...just copy it somewhere else while you clean install and move your files back

all you need to do then is reinstall programs, which is not hard

Big mistake. You don't ever clone a drive with an operating system on it if you want it to run properly.

Critical (and most likely protected) data hasn't been cloned correctly. Windows really hates beeing cloned.

Stop freaking out and do a fresh installation of your operating system. Yes, you will lose every bit of data on a harddrive if you erase it, but since you have now two drives you can use the hdd to create a back-up of your files and the ssd as your shiny new system drive. Dude for real, just do a clean install.

Wow I'm sorry to tell you this, but this kind of looks really messed up. Can you store all the data you need somewhere safe? Like on an external drive? If yes, do it. After that, do a fresh Windows installation, and delete all the partitions. You can do this the moment the installation tool asks you were you want your windows installation to be at. After a clean install you should be good.
