Hi, this is the plan for my new build, i just wanted to post it here and get some feedback. firstly its an upgrade of my current X-79/R9 290x rig. the budget i am aiming for lest that $2000. the Rig is going to be used for heavy gaming, High resolution and FPS, ran on 3 x 28" 4k Monitors.

X-99 Sabertooth Motherboard (DDR4, Socket 2011 - v3)

Intel i7 5930k w/ H110i

Corsair Dominator 32Gb (4 x 8Gb)(DDR4 3200Mhz)

HyperX Predator (M.2) 240Gb

2 x MSI NVidia GTX 980ti SLI

Corsair 1200w Modular PSU

Cooler Master STRYKER case

several extra fans

3Tb WD Black HDD

I think the main task is going to be fitting all of this inside the Stryker case, its a full tower, but that is a lot of kit with all the radiators and extra fans.

Any Additions/Alterations folks?

Alright, I think that proccessor is a overkill and I was talking about keyboard, mouse, webcam, mic etc.

main question is do you REALLY need x99? x79 is still an awesome platform... DDR4 should not be a deciding factor if it is. Plus if you have a Sandy Bridge-E processor you can activate full speed PCIE 3.0 if you havent... 3960x and 3970x overclocks like 4960X and performs the same... and basically performs almost like if not better than the 5930K especially overclocked. what are your specs? we might be able to improve your setup and save you money

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 3960X | Motherboard: Intel DX79SR "Stormville" | RAM: 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 PC3-12800 (4x 8GB) Quad-Channel | GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 970 FTW 4GB in SLI (I have Many other builds plus 100+ Macs (don't judge me)... Many specs are listed on my profile)

At this point, before you purchase two 980ti's now as it sounds like you are doing a complete overhaul,
you might want to wait until Pascal drops in [hopefully] June and see what the 10x series puts out.

[CPU: 4.7ghz I5 6600k] [MBAsus Z170 Pro G] [RAM: G.Skill 2400 16GB(2x8)]

[Storage: 500GB WD HDD / 128GB SanDisk SSD ] [Case: DeepCool Tessaract]

[Keyboard: AZIO MGK1] [Mouse: Logitech G303] [Monitor: 2 x Acer 23" 1080p IPS]

1200w is overkill, isn't it? I think 800w will be plenty.

maybe a 1000W... with my x79 build, 2 980TIs would require me to upgrade to a 1200W from my 1000W from all the calculations I have done... depends on system specs and power draw. I know mine is over powered with a 1000W right now (I draw probably around 700W-750W) but I wanted to be able to upgrade to better video cards in the future. But I found the 980TIs I want need like 1100W with my entire setup combined... hopefully the 1080s pull less power so I don't have to get a new PSU... but still it might not be over kill for him

You can always send back the PSU if the pc happens to black-out because of the power issue. (at least here in the Netherlands)

My Current specs are:

X-79 Sabertooth

i cant remember the CPU i think is an i7 3820, its definitely not a K version, it doesn't overclock very well

16Gb RAM running at 1866Mhz

Corsair 750w Modular PSU

AMD R9 290x GPU

120Gb SSD Boot drive and a 1TB WD blue HDD

i definitely want better RAM, Processor and GPU, what do you think i can do with that?

I'd honestly keep the PSU if it's any good. 1200W is way too much for dual GTX 980Tis - 850W should give you a nice buffer for a Haswell-E and dual 980Ti setup but that 750W should run that rig fine anyhow.

Speaking of the CPU, just grab the cheaper i7 5820K. You won't need the extra lanes of the i7 5930K unless you're planning to do four way SLI (which is pretty much a waste of money).

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Spoiler

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K - 4.5 GHz | Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO | RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 | SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB | GPU: MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB | PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 | Case: NZXT Phantom 530 | Cooling: CRYORIG R1 Ultimate | Monitor: ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q | Peripherals: Corsair Vengeance K70 and Razer DeathAdder

5930k is overkill for gaming, an 5820k or a 4790/6700k will do

you can save money with a 3960x like I did (3930k is 100MHz slower and cheaper in price and 3970X 200MHz faster and more expensive... but they perform almost the same if not the same overclocking), and activate PCI-E 3.0 (You might need a BIOS update) if you haven't with this  http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3135/~/geforce-gen3-support-on-x79-platform (works with AMD cards too)...

All 40 PCIE lanes on Sandy Bridge-E are 2.0 according to Intel but are actually 3.0... (3.0 hadn't been certified yet that's why)

Your board supports 4960X (and other Ivy Bridge-E series) with a BIOS update but it even though its a smaller process (22nm vs 32nm) it OCs roughly the same and sometimes worse than Sandy Bridge-E plus Ivy Bridge-E cools worse sometimes, because the IHS has thermal paste under it instead of it being soldered on to the die.. but it's your choice

You can get a 32GB DDR3 GSKILL kit very cheap, in fact you can go with a 64GB too if you want or you can add to you current ram to 32GB depending on how many slots you have populated.

You can still get the 2 980TIs or wait for Pascal and run them at full speed.

and you will need more PSU power I recommend at least 1000W you might need more, you might get away with less. But its always better to have too much power than too little and the PSU will only draw the power it needs

hope this helps and it will save you a lot of money in the end
