What do players like to see on a main menu?

I am making a game and on the main menu I was wondering what people like to see? So far I have a nice colour base and a window with some update notices in it and a play and exit button, what else do you like to see or have in main menus?

Some background with some content in the game, landscapes or something, settings facebook and twitter pages, instructions, hints.
You could even go as far as to link to game development blogs

I think most players like to see easy targets at high end bars  

 

Realistically, I think a fairly minimalistic design for all the menu options on the surface that can expand to more detailed options within them. Background should definitely be some scenery from the game (think like how Arma 3 and borderlands 2 does it) with something moving and some quiet music for some ambiance (don't be CSGO at default settings ( ͡° ʖ̯ ͡°)).
