going to grab my friend a gtx 970 for his upcoming birthday and wanting to know which brand and model should I go for him. He is a moderate overclocker but if given a choice, cooling efficiency is most important to him. My budget to spend for gtx 970 is $360. Hope to see everyone recommendations and thanks alot.

I thought about pascal but because time is short and limited, I have no choice but to choose maxwell so have mercy on me guys xD

I would get a GTX 970 FTW edition its under budget, quiet and good for overclocking. Here is a link:

I have a 980ti with same cooler and it is whisper silent under full load.

isn't that the triple-fanned one?

People are right, the 390 is better. If he goes 390 get a Sapphire triple fan one, those are by far the best.

If you're going 970, I would suggest MSI. Twin Frozr is NEVER a bad choice :) I would also suggest the STRIX one, or maybe the Windforce 3X if he has a larger case.

MSI GE72 Apache Pro-242 - (5700HQ : 970M : 16gb RAM : 17.3" : Win10 : 1TB HDD : Razer Anansi : Some mouse) - hooked up to a 34UM58-P (WFHD) in dual screen

iPad Air 2 (for school)

iPhone 6

Xbox One Forza 6 Limited Edition Blue

Eh, to be fair, he said his friend liked overclocking.

Wait for Polaris and Pascal then. The 970 isnt worth it right now, and if your friend likes ocing he'll be rather disappointed with a 390.

And 390 is bad at overclocking?

Im sure both 970 and 390 are great overclockers

A 380x overclocked runs as good as the 970 stock

The numbers man, what's considered a good oc on the 390 does not translate to what a good oc is on the 970. With the 970, you can usually get the core clock much higher than the 390, although you get better returns from overclocking a 390.

No. A 380X overclocked won't run as fast as the stock 970 unless it's a very poorly optimized game like Quantum Break. 390 gets more performance per mhz. but will clock far far lower than a 970 under similar conditions

Current PC: Origin Millennium- i7 5820K @4.0GHz | GTX 980Ti SLI | X99 Deluxe

Quantum Break is poorly optimized?

At least on Nvidia cards. It runs like absolute trash. I'm actually interested in the game but it's not worth it at $60 and the possibility for issues on my system.

I thought that was just DX12 combined with A-Sync compute, not that it was poorly optimized.

No. It doesn't use async. It was directly ported from the Xbox one using Microsoft's UWP. Check out this article http://www.tweaktown.com/guides/7655/quantum-break-pc-performance-analysis/index2.html They used a program which allows them to see what the API is doing when the game is running. NOTHING is in the compute queue. Which means the developers had no intention to use async. Also, yes it is poorly optimized. They are using the same reconstruction method from the Xbox and there's an FPS cap that doesn't match your monitor's refresh rate(50fps cap for a 60hz monitor). Now that I sort of went one a small rant I am disgusted(not really but fitting word), that Microsoft/Remedy would dare treat PC gamers like their peasant slaves. Especially, when they had the audacity to recommend a freaking 980Ti/Fury X for their broken POS game. They dared to peddle their BS to enthusiast gamers, what idiots.

Yep. I'd say it's partly Nvidia's fault but 80% Microsoft/Remedy. Some people might have gooey feelings for Remedy because of their decent job on Alan Wake. But their presentation when they announced Quantum Break was straight out of the Peasant's text book. Like even a typical Xbox One owner would cringe at it. Definitely not a good impression on PC gamers.
