970 is more popular according to Steam and uses less power I believe. the 380 has more performance I think... but I'd go for more vid ram, so the 970

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 3960X | Motherboard: Intel DX79SR "Stormville" | RAM: 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series DDR3 PC3-12800 (4x 8GB) Quad-Channel | GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 970 FTW 4GB in SLI (I have Many other builds plus 100+ Macs (don't judge me)... Many specs are listed on my profile)

for all the situation i can come up in my head, the gtx 970 is the winner lol

slow cpu: gtx 970 due to lower cpu overhead in dx11 games

power consumption worries due to 520W psu: gtx 970 for lower tdp

nah, the gtx 970 have more raw horsepower, the r9 390 is the one competing with the gtx 970

380 is better then 960, not 970. The 390 has better preformance then the 970. And you can get the 380 with 2 og 4 gb of vram. The 970 has 4/3.5 gb.

A 970 will have around 10+ fps more in pretty much all the games compared to the 380(X). You also more for the 970 and it's more power efficient. Both of the cards will run those cards just fine. So 970 > 380 for raw performance.

if for example i choose the r9 is it worth sacrificing 10fps less (i think) for the 970 performance and price???

380 has more VRAM but Nvidia has better support for most games so you will avoid any problems like stuttering or bad optimizations. A good example of this is JUST CAUSE 3. Great game if you use Nvidia cards but barely works with AMD.

Main System Specs:

  • Intel Core i5 6500 3.2GHz CPU
  • Gigabyte GA-H170-D3H Motherboard
  • Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB 2400MHz, Gskill Ripjaws 8GB
  • Asus GTX 1060 Turbo
  • Kingston HyperX Savage 240GB SSD
  • Seagate 1TB NAS Grade HDD x2
  • Thermaltake NiC F3 Cooler
  • EVGA Supernova 750 G2 Power Supply
  • NZXT S340 Red/Black Case
  • Noctua NF-F12 Fan x2

Laptop Specs:

  • Intel Pentium N3700 CPU
  • 4GB Kingston RAM
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • Windows 10 Home

Peripherals:

  • Microsoft Wired 600 KB
  • Dell 2003 Mouse
  • HP Compaq LA2206x Monitor
  • Logitech X530 5.1 Speakers
  • Roland RH-5 Headphones

I never keep track with AMD since I'm team green... so the 380 is the one that competes with the 960 correct? so needless to say go with the 970

If you're in the 970 budget range go for the r9 390 I believe that it performs better for around the same price.

depends on the games you play

but i would wait for pascal if possible, get the person buy you a gift to wait, or give you the $$$ :P

if i had to pick one now, i would probably still go with the 970, because the 2gb vram on the r9 380 you chose is the limiting factor for 1080p gaming

i recommend try finding an r9 390 or 390x if you can stretch your budget

though it depends on what cpu are you using.

from what i know having build systems with both cards. id say the 970 is definitly better performance wise. also here the 380 goes for 200-240ish and you can grab a 970 for 250-270ish. so including the price id say definitly 970.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"
