The meat and potatoes of reddit are the comments sections. People can either post a link to an image or an article, or can write a "self-post" which is pure text meant to encourage discussion. There's a bit of a learning curve to Reddit in becoming familiar to the mechanics, but you get over that after the first couple days. Reddit is MASSIVE, so if you find yourself in a subreddit that you don't enjoy, just hop to another. Most people on reddit stick to subreddits that have to do with their own interests. Give it a chance.

It's a gigantic community of people.

There are sub-reddits, like sub forums.

So you have a tech sub @ reddit.com/r/technology

You have a gaming sub @ reddit.com/r/gaming

& So on.

You can subscribe to these subreddits and the posts will appear on a giant front page. You can edit what you see on your front page to be news, pictures, videos all of your liking.

I like Reddit for tech stuff because you are getting direct posts from the people it actually involves.

The main reason to get an account is so you can filter what subreddits show up for you on your front page.

Think of subreddits as the same as the subsections of this forum, now imagine all of the posts lumped together in on long page of links rather than just in each subsection.  That is your front page.  You can still go to the subreddits individually (or even in groups if you like) if you prefer, but you can also set it up so that only the topics you care about show up for you on the front page.  A lot of people end of unsubscribing from many of the "default" subreddits, so if you feel like you are getting rid of a lot of trash, you are not alone.

You can also see what subreddit something was posted to, so if you find that you are annoyed by or just don't like some of the posts from a given subreddit, you can unsubscribe to it and it will not show up on your front page.

Likewise you can add smaller/specific subreddits that will show up for you, but are not reliant to others.  For instance I live in the Denver area so I am subscribed to the Denver subreddit.  So you can really customize it a fair amount in terms of what content shows up.  You can delete all the defaults and fill them only with stuff you want if you so choose.  Many have accounts and don't post.

Everyone seems to love reddit.

Maybe when it's opposite day. I don't care for it and my friends show a flat out hatred for it. So no, not everyone loves reddit.

What don't you like about it? 90% of reasons I see have to do with not filtering out the subreddits you don't like. The other 10% is not being used to the site layout/interface.
