Asrock gets around non-K Skylake overclocking limits again

ppppppp

Good on ASRock for not being afraid of Intel. The only reason Intel is doing this in the first place is to get people to pay more for K variants...

pretty sure this is old news

and to whoever wants to overclock, just get an overclocking board and chip, please `-`

you'll save yourself from a ton of hassle dodging micro-codes and what not

Please look at the article before commenting. This is not old news ("March 10") this is different than the previous Non K overclocking techniques and might no  be able to be stopped with microcodes as it's a integrated part of the board (More info in the article). Also many people might see this as a viable option as (maybe not so much where you live) 6600Ks cost a lot more than i5 6500 and 6600.

Ok in your eyes that might of been a long time ago but because Asrock has kept it on the down low many people are not aware of this. But my point still stands this might be a lot harder to circumvent than before.

with $20 more you get to officially overclock your chip without worrying about anything

and the board can support higher speed ram

No, they bring external clock generators to H170 and B150 chipset boards which are in teory less expensive then Z170 motherboards.

Its more like $40 difference between 6500 and 6600k. But you can always get i3 6100 for $110 and overclock the fuck out of it.

mATX Z170 mobo (naturally cheaper) vs ATX B150 (naturally more expensive), now try a mATX B150 mobo.

How about pairing 6500 with Z170 board lol.

if they come in an overclocking variety, sure

there's an z170 ATX gigabyte board cheaper than the one i picked anyway

yea but between the two builds i make, the difference is more like $13~

they have to add in a new chip to the motherboard, thus raising the price

it may not be as high as z170 motherboards though (though the one in the article is more expensive than some)

Uh duh, it'd allow it to be overclocked. Although you should be able to overclock any unlocked Skylake chip on any motherboard, if my H87M Pro is anything to go by (4.8GHz with my i7 4790K):

http://www.thetechrevolutionist.com/2013/08/review-asus-h87m-pro-motherboard.html

^That reviewer did only 4.3GHz on his 4770K however.

Cheap overclock?

sure you'll get to OC

but you'll have to dodge microcodes update and what not

and also not having proper temps reading if im not mistaken

all in all, z170 chipset + locked chip may still be a viable option, but im personally not sold for it, i would pay extra just to get myself official support for stuffs

im just pointing out that the motherboard that asrock made is just pointless if it cost more than some z170 chipset motherboards, that its almost enough to cover for the cost saved by going with a locked chip

I see your point but prices are much different i other places. Also many people are not fans of micro ATX boards due to limited functionality in most cases(No pun intended).

i believe its more for aesthetics more often than not (i chose atx over mitx so i know)

and as i mentioned, there is a z170 gigabyte board cheaper than the one i picked, and its ATX sized

You forget that prices are not the same everywhere in the world.

In my case, 6600k was almost $100 more expensive than 6500 (6 months ago).

"Dodging microcodes" is nothing but avoiding "locked" BIOS, and even if you update it you can always go back.

My chip never went over 55C at 4.6GHz in stress tests on air cooling, so I dont see a reason why not to overclock. Its all about free performance ;)

Yep. I've only ever used ATX boards until my H87M Pr, and while I didn't need to replace it for my 4790K, the added expandability of my Z97 Sabertooth MKII (which has dead audio unlike the H87M Pro) was definitely worth the cost.

tbh I hate how intel tells you what you can and cannot do with your hardware. If you buy a piece of tech you should be able to do what ever you want with it.

this i agree, but mega corp, what can you do

hoping AMD will beat the crap out of intel and nvidia with zen and polaris

intel and nvidia have been screwing with their users more and more lately, esp nvidia

I really hope they make Zen+polaris APU and soon. This laptop really is getting too costly to maintain in full working order:
