i have the chance to buy an I5 2500k for about $100. the regular price is about $220. anyone have any issues with this cpu or think that despite the cheap price it just isnt worth it?

the price is good, depending that it hasn't been hi-volted its entire used life.

the P67/Z68/Z77 motherboards are getting pretty tough to find at a decent price used, new just unexplainable on the price gouging.

yea. thats one of the reasons im not so sure about doing it. all that id truly be saving is about 40 but it would give me the ability to overclock rather than being stuck with a stock 6500

6500 is far a better CPU over the 2500k.

the 2500k overclock will only narrow the performance gap (not surpass) to the 6500.

the 6500 has a slower clock speed than the 2500k by .1 and ive heard people saying they can overclock the 2500k up to 4.4

Get the processor.  It's a good CPU for that money.

I'd say the 6500 is only 'Kinda Better'.  Saying that it is 'Far Better' would be grossly inaccurate when it's only a little over 9% faster in terms of pure CPU benchmark results.

do what 'cha gotta do, the newer tech is better than 9% (cinebench R15) and finding decent overclock support motherboards is not a cheap endeavor.

1155 is a good platform, but getting outdated with each platform revealed.

It is a good price for the 2500k, and yes the 2500k is still a very capable processor.

I find that generally though, you can do better buying a CPU/Mobo/RAM combo all at once. The notional CPU price may seem high. but you are almost always saving a fair bit on the mobo. It all depends on the mobo.

 

That's because in order to overclock it, you REQUIRE a P67/Z68/Z77 based mobo and they are hard to find used. No, a H77 based chipset won't work for overclocking. 

The price has gone WAY up on OC SandyBridge/Ivy Bridge mobos. (Say thanks to Scrapyard Wars!) 

 

Expect to pay $100-$150 for a OC mobo on its own with an I/O plate.   You might score one as part of a sell off on Craigslist from a non-knowledgeable seller, but the used market has become very competitive in many areas with guys haunting CL like they used to haunt eBay 10-12 years ago while trying to make a living at it. Going for a 2500k/OC_Mobo combo ensures you won't get saddled with a chip you might not be able to use for as little as you thought.
